Since I cluttered the "New toys thread" that last couple of days, Viper suggested making a general help thread for everybody to participate.

So here comes my first question: I wanna have a messenger for ICQ, what do I nedd to install, which one is the best and which order in installing things (heard there is a proper order...)?

Thx!

I think someone asked this question before and Viper gave some instructions on how to jailbreak your phone. And it seems now its getting easier and easier, i suggest you hit up tuaw.com and look the new version on it.

We'll make this the "official" how-to thread. The other was kinda OT. Also, I have no clue how to unlock iPhones (use on an unofficial carrier).

You will loose all data on the phone / iPod. So, write down any settings or whatever you care about.

All jailbreaking starts with reverting to 1.1.1 which contains the TIFF exploit (you could hack the phone via a malformed TIFF image).

Go here and download the ZIP: http://conceitedsoftware.com/iphone/112jb.html

Read the readme inside. It'll walk you through reverting to 1.1.1, jailbreaking it, and then upgrading to 1.1.2.

Firmware Download URLs:

iPhone 1.1.1: http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite...927.In76t/iPhone1,1_1.1.1_3A109a_Restore.ipsw
iPhone 1.1.2: http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite...1107.5Bghn/iPhone1,1_1.1.2_3B48b_Restore.ipsw

iPod Touch 1.1.1: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=V7H8X2QQ (couldn't find the URL to the Apple hosted one)
iPod Touch 1.1.2: http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite...071107.9g3DF/iPod1,1_1.1.2_3B48b_Restore.ipsw

Then once you're on 1.1.2, you can upgrade to 1.1.3 which is what I'm running (1.1.4 only contains seriously minor bug fixes). We'll get to that though once you have 1.1.2 running well.

There's an app now called ZiPhone which jailbreaks (and automatically installs "Installer"). I tried it, it doesn't get any easier than this! All it takes is 5 clicks, and within 2 minutes it jailbreaks your phone! No more messing around with down/upgrades!

It also automatically unlocks 4.6BL phones as well.

doesn't work for the touches, afaik

^ According to Ziphone it doesn't on the 1.1.4 which is the most recent, therefore most likely FW for people to have...

BTW: I got more help in the new toys thread than in here... Still don't know which way to go for an icp like application... :-(

^ I don't do ICQ, so I don't know if it's the best, but the most common seems to be Apollo (which is on the Installer).

Was there anything new in the Apple firmware update 1.1.4 for the iTouch? I haven't really noticed anything since updating.

So, apparently we're going to have to wait until June for Apple to release the 2.0 phone/touch update so it can accept 802.1x authentication.

Funny thing is, my sister's Uni doesn't use 802.1x (so her touch works fine there), but my Uni does. Bastards.

Been hunting around to see if there's a hack to make it happen sooner but to no avail:'(

I'm glad to hear that. So far I thought this would never come!
My Uni uses that, too, so right now I'm fooked...

It's just fucking annoying that Apple has been accepting 802.1x on their computers since 10.3 (they're now up to 10.5) but they don't put it on the phone/touch from the word go...

Yeah we use 802.1x at uni now as well, we used to use a crap ass cisco vpn that dropped out every other minute

I don't know if you guys already know this, but I found an app for "In-Pocket-iPod-Control":

PocketTouch. A lot of you have been wishing that you had a convenient way to control your iPods while it was in your pocket, or wherever you keep it. Well, I got enough requests, so I made just something to do that.

* When you run the Application, the screen will be black. That is to help preserve screen life and avoid images burning into the screen.
* As long as MusicPlayer (or iPod) is playing a song, a simple tap on the screen will pause the song.
* Tap the screen again to unpause.
* Slide your finger to the right to skip to the next song.
* Slide your finger to the left to play the previous song.

As of right now, up and down weren't programmed to have a purpose, so I let them do the play/pause feature as well as just tapping. If you run the program in SSH and watch the output, you will see that the app knows how to read up and down.

I simply installed it with the Installer, using the following source:
http://www.touchrepo.com/repo.xml

Seems to work quite well and is helpful.
