The lack of employment/Laid off/Thread

Degree do help to some extent, the Great Enemy (HR departments) are known to scan resumes for things like college degrees and certs.

A tactic to get around this is to find whomever runs the department you want to work in and ask them about the job before applying. This can get you a foot in despite the Great Enemy.

I'll have to remember this.

In other news i've sent out resumes (or at least called for more info per the cl ad) for several warehouse positions, a bank teller position and I think 2 call center positions. I've also completed a support.com app and just finished a application for a position at a rival of my current job that pays more and hopefully has more stable hours.

I also called PHEAA's HR department and left a message inquiring about the status of my application.

There's a job fair for one warehouse that i'll try to go to if my dad comes home soon enough to let me borrow his car.

Good news! I'm a Sandero "model ambassador"!

Kidding, kidding. My stepmom apologized today for being so stressed out and being annoying. Which was nice. Still moving, leaving later tonight lol.

On the job front: staples called me back, I left a message. Shot out more resumes and applied for work at Aldi.

Support.com gave me a rejection letter. I am unsure as to where I went wrong. I suspect it was my response to this question (or I was right but went over the time limit by thinking the question through)

"Give 3 ways to share a folder using windows 7. Describe the steps you'd take."

I said create a homegroup (then described the process of homegroup creation and joining, as well as how to share a folder with the homegroup), create a workgroup (ditto), and drag the desired shared folder into the public folder on the system.

Oh well, no biggie, just wish I got more detailed feedback lol.

When you get a rejection letter, follow up on it. Ask what went wrong and how you could improve - not as if you are trying to get a second chance at the job (though you may well be) but as if you are trying to learn what you can correct. Sometimes you'll get another shot, sometimes you just get valuable feedback.

As a break from the "outside IT" work I've been trying for, I'm going to go for this: https://app2.ohr.psu.edu/Jobs/External/EVMS2_External/currentap1.cfm#39481

It's far away (would be a 2 hour commute from my current area), sure...but the pay scale should prove decent and with other IT openings available there, it would provide ample opportunity to move up I suspect. That and if I got the job I'd likely get really cheap tuition...finishing up via online courses or evening classes on campus would be a excellent opportunity for me.

Done. Waiting on a response from them now. :)

I feel like im filling this thread with my updates. Apologies. Let me know if it's too much.

Penn State got back to me. I've sent a e-mail back per spectre's advice.

I do have two bits of good news. I have a interview with CenturyLink tomorrow and a interview with Comcast. Both are call center positions but im hoping for the CenturyLink gig over Comcast. It would be a far shorter commute from my brother's house, pays more, and deals with tech support as opposed to billing.

Plus the hours I'd likely work are perfect: 2 to like 10 IIRC. I don't mind that, it gives me time to go to class if needed.

Haha maybe I should...JK

I just got back from an interview with CenturyLink. I feel it went excellent and want to work there immensely.

Hopefully it went well.

I visited comcast today. Great place, great benefits too. I got pulled aside before my actual interview and was told that they noticed the IT experience on my resume. Turns out they're hiring at a center in york that specialized in technical issues.

While the drive would be longer...an hour to a hour and a half, the pay would be more..a lot more. Like 14 bucks an hour (2nd shift...13 for 1st) compared to 11.

Downsides..that commute. Although the pay makes up for it, 2nd shift also gets off work at 1 am. I wouldn't be home in Carlisle until 2 am.

With 2 small kids and 2 dogs, I doubt my brother and his GF would be game for that happening 5 nights a week. But the pay would theoretically allow me to find a roomate or maybe even a apartment sooner. I would also be closer to my mom

Another downside: i've also really liked what i've seen at CenturyLink. Sure the pay is less at 11 dollars per hour, but the interview process was refreshing, the employees were warm and friendly and overall it had a strong "small family" vibe that I liked.

The commute to CenturyLink would also take minutes, not hours as it is also in Carlisle.

Furthermore, they want to move people up quickly to Tier 2 and beyond..so yay?

Anyway, the interview with Comcast's tech support is tomorrow. I'll go for it just in case.

Go for both until something is certain. If you have to choose, that's the best outcome.

Got a job at a local resort just north of where I live. Starts on Monday. And, by all accounts, it is definitely pretty awesome. 10$/hr base plus commission, Sunday-Thursday (I get my weekend the way I want it, finally) 1-8pm (and no forced overtime!), paychecks are every week, benefits like PTO and sick leave start after you've been there 90 days, and the whole place is a family business that's grown and branched out but the family who started it all still own and work there. I'll actually get to meet all the people who do the important stuff (like MY PAYCHECK), the CEO, etc. and the lady who interviewed me seemed super awesome. I'm still a little nervous because, as is the case, it looks good on paper but it could turn out to be just another clusterfuck for me or...I could be a complete tool and screw it up for myself, like often happens...or it could actually be as good as it sounds. Either way, I get to find out in 5 days...

Awesome, remember that they clearly saw something in you that made them go "hire her!" Use that to keep your sprits up if you're uneasy when you first start.

Yeah, its just, with my last two long-term jobs ending so royally fucked up, I do have some reason to be apprehensive. Mostly, I'm worried that it'll be awesome and that I'll still find a way to screw things up. For me, that just seems par for the course...but, I keep reminding myself that I won't be dealing directly with customers, and as long as my coworkers don't suck donkey dicks I should be able to cope way, way better than I ever did at the casino or Harbor Freight.

I still can't get over businesses where you have to earn your right to sick days after 90 days.... that's kinda fucked up - it's not like something you can control when you're sick

Congrats!

had my interview today with Dish network. They had me stay to go ahead and do the second interview on the spot so I took that as a good sign.

Also they're giving away a 2013 Mustang GT with all the goodies on it, (placed smack dab in the atrium) and while I'm not eligible to win it (bastards!) I struck up a convo with the head HR guy about cars for a good 20 minutes during the interview. :)

He gave me the thumbs up on the way out, so.....here's hoping!!

They pretty much all do that here. And yes, it sucks serious balls.

Obviously not a policy the businesses came up with out of the blue but something learned through the years... Obviously there was exploitation of the "sick days" in some way.
I remember I used to work for a call center and they would send a doctor along to check if you're sick if you called in a sick day, I think that's the correct way to go about it.

Better than the place I had the job with for all of a week, they wanted to make you work for them for a year before you got any of those benefits. Granted, all the places I've worked still allow sick days anyway, you just don't get paid for them, so it tends to discourage people from faking them, especially if they're already underpaid and not working enough to be able to afford to lose a day's pay. (When I worked at the casino I stopped giving any fucks and did it anyway because I was afraid I'd go batshit on someone some days). Some places don't give any benefits to their part time employees, not even sick pay or PTO, and some places do. I've worked at both kinds. I'm glad I will get benefits at this place, because working a full time job and not getting any benefits would suck.

Not paying sick days stops people from faking them but also force people who are mildly sick to go to work anyway and infect everyone needlessly.
