The most beautiful F1 cars of each decade

While I was considering the black Arrows designs, those were 90s cars and had to take a back seat to the Jordan and the bizarrely-attired Lolas. If only Orange hadn't climbed on board until a year later...

bizarrely-attired Lolas.

What, this slow heap of junk?

Is that even slower than this?! Impossible!:p

A fully black livery makes any F1 car look very good; it enhances the most curved parts of it and makes it look... a bit sexier. The 1998 Arrows and the non-liveried Jordan 191 look awesome in that perspective.

The Lola was 7 seconds a lap OFF 107% time!! They folded after qualifying at Melbourne when Mastercard pulled their sponsorship.

^ Really makes you wonder how they would have performed with the proper funding, and had it not been rushed to be completed for 1997, instead of the planned 1998 debut.

They would have been just as bad cos they had Sospiri and the ever talented (not) Riccardo Rosset (who I hated)

The car never saw a wind tunnel either. We wont know how good or bad Sospiri was but he was a shitload quicker than his teammate anyway. Hard to get an accurate measure on him when the car is 14 seconds off the qualifying pace...

The last Lola F1 project was such a disgrace for a company with such a great heritage in motorsports. It effectively killed off Sospiri's F1 career before it had even started(perhaps he was not world championship material, but F3000 championship proves that he had potential) and very nearly killed off the whole company. Obviously Eric Broadley didn't quite have an accurate idea on what it takes to succeed in F1 at the time. I recall a season preview show where he said something along the lines of 'we are expecting to be on par with Stewart by the latter half of the year'. That quite a confident statement, for at that time it was already clear that Stewart had the 'factory' Ford engines while Lola had the basic client engines. Things didn't quite turn out that way, did they...

In a way, the whole Lola deal puts Super Aguri's entry to F1 into perspective. They had about equal time frame for the project of creating an F1 team, but unlike SA Lola already had a race car factory and plenty of capable personnel to work on the project. And SA is still around, and while they were slow in their first races it was all far from disgrace.

Aggressive, good-looking, and extremely dominant. Gentlemen, I give you the Williams-Renault FW14B.

Looks good while stationary, looks even better on track.

Its the original clown car! Loved the shape, but yeah, not sure on the livery...

While I was working on this, I came to really appreciate the beauty of the McLaren mp4-21. In my mind, there's no such thing as an ugly McLaren, but this car has to go somewhere near the top with that aggressive looking shape (the horns!) and striking chrome livery.

Is this Williams more appropriate?

Williams-Renault FW16, number 0, driver - Damon Hill

A good-looking car, unfortunately also a killer. Literally. :(

God I miss wide track F1 cars. The cars today are SOOO damn narrow comapared to 15 years ago.

That's why fat girls wear black, to make their contours look less visible, take a look at a Black SLR vs a Silver SLR. You can't even see the cool stuff on the side of the SLR if its black. Thus black sucks.

Yes, that slow heap of junk. I said it looked good - from a colour scheme point of view. That, as Lola's last almost as pathetic effort also proved (i.e. the other one I pointed out), has bugger all to with how fast it goes. The thread was on good-looking cars; despite this Lola's obvious aerodynamic megashortcomings, it's into the era of heavily-regulated identikit chassis designs, so I made my choice entirely on the colour schemes. Which is why I'm annoyed this car was so hopelessly slow, because it was only ever seen in pictures, rather than on my TV screen. I have no recollection if ITV were showing the qualifying back then; given that it was their first GP, I doubt it.

My favourite Williams is the FW18 from 1996

This decade: the MP4/20. And it was fast. Very fast.
