A place to chat about musical instruments of any kind whether its instrumental news, instruments you may own or just general advice and conversation about any instruments. Pics are encouraged. :)

To get the ball rolling here be my 2 guitars in all their cheapness.

I have been playing properly for about a year now.

1st guitar I bought was a Gear4music Stratocaster copy really one of the cheapest full size electric guitars you can buy brand new, it cost ?70.

Here it is.

Pics are from a while back, it now has a Blink182 sticker on the pickguard.

My second guitar is a Harley Benton HBL500 Les Paul copy. I did my research before buying this guitar its made by a german company so its decent quality for the money. Humbucker pickups for a nice rock sound and a spikey cutaway which I pefer over Gibsons slightly rounded style.

The guitar, I'm not sure what it is really, appart form a Yamaha. It used to by Mum's but she got bored so now its mine.
I use a tiny Yamaha GA-10 amp, the power cable is held together with tape so any movement while playing gives you loads of interferance very loudly!

Photo-0003.jpg

The keyboard, I don't like it, hi a key hard you get "ding", play it soft you get "ding" no movement or feeling to it, buts its all I've got if sombody is watch TV and I can't get to the piano.
Casio LK-43 apparently.

The Accordian, yep, West German and old, probably 60s/70s. European style tuning, not Scottish like my smaller accordian hiding under the bed.
its a Weltmeister, Its also got a slight leak in the belows and some of the reeds are knackered, not bad for a ?200 eBay buy though.

Also have a ?60 clarinet somewhere but I couldn't find it and of course my favourite the ?3000, 1912 Bluthner piano thats downstairs. Obviously when we moved house the removal men dropped it, so the bottom corner is all mashed. :(
No pics of that either, so heres a video of me playing it.
Ugh, such bad playing

Also in the household are 3 flutes, a harp and a saxaphone.

I wish I could play something cooler than the piano. Which I can't play well at all anyway. We have a Korg electronic keyboard thing that looks mostly like this but I haven't played it in a while as I've given up on it.

I would love to be able to play the drums or guitar, but don't have the skill or money or time or space or effort to attempt to learn.

After owning many guitars over the last...jeez...20 years now?...I've owned everything from Fender Strat (American and Mexican), Gibson Les Paul (Studio) to an Ibanes S540, a GTX, a Hamer Standard, a couple strat copies, a Lotus GLP Standard copy, an SG, etc etc I was about ready to give up on guitar. I had played for a while, but haven't found it "fun" for over a decade. I was going to look for a drummer with a nice Tama or DW set who wanted to play guitar and swap gear. I always had band practice at my house and the drummer usually left a set there, so I always played around on it and had a blast. I finally decided "Okay...I'll give guitar one more chance." I made a "dream guitar" in my mind, and started shopping around. I tried a few things from Musicians Friend (when they were having free shipping deals) and Guitar Center, did a bunch of online research. I narrowed down all of the features I knew I wanted, and more importantly, new what features I DIDN'T want (I gave up tremolo, cold-turkey). Then, Carvin came out with their carved-top single-cut. I've been getting their catalogs for years and always wondered...but I haven't thought about them since I moved to California (the only state they have physical stores in where I could try one.) I gave it a shot, picked my options, and 6 weeks later had an American-made fully-customized guitar for under $2K, and it's simply the best guitar I've ever owned, and probably tied for first for the best I've ever played (the other that it tied with...a $12,500 PRS). I love guitar again.

I thought this was going to be my "final, perfect guitar" but it's made me want like 5-6 more from this company. :)

What I knew I wanted:
-A satin-finished poly neck (no gloss for me anymore. My Gibson Les Paul ruined glossy necks for me, forever)
-Fixed-bridge (I never learned how to use a tremolo very well, so I don't know why I kept buying guitars with them)
-Graphite/teflon nut
-Humbuckers with a coil-splitter
-I always loved Joe Perry's signature Les Paul, but it was WAY too expensive, too heavy, and glossy neck...but it was stunning to look at.

Here's what I got:

Unfortunately, my musical setup is quite low right now. I would love to have more, but a self-sustaining student's budget does not allow it.

So here's my DJing setup:
http://img17.imageshack.**/img17/5154/tablessl1200m3d.jpg
2x Technics SL1200 M3D turntables (for mixing and scratching)

http://img200.imageshack.**/img200/1715/451618421089.gif
1x Vestax PCV-275 mixer

http://img25.imageshack.**/img25/5091/1149715393.jpg
1x Maya44 soundcard and 2 serrato timecode vinyls for interfacing with laptop

http://img200.imageshack.**/img200/9796/162imagesaudiotechnica2.jpg
1x Audio-Technica ATH M30 studio monitoring headphones

+a few classic amplifiers and large Sony speakers.

And my studio setup:
http://img16.imageshack.**/img16/7514/keyrig49top.jpg
M-Audio KeyRig49 synth-action MIDI keyboard

http://img22.imageshack.**/img22/3450/kore2xlarge.jpg
Native Instruments Kore 2 virtual instrument controller

+ my very powerfull PC to handle all of the virtual instruments

...unfortunately I don't have a nice soundcard at the moment and it's killing me.
also lacking monitoring speakers, so I have to make due with headphones, which sucks.

Sorry for the stock pictures, but the house is a mess and everything's packed up in boxes, since I recently moved. Also, exams next week, so they will stay hidden until after exams.

Here's me with my Washburn Idol 64 V while performing with K?rspexet.

A great guitar in a lot of ways. It's a bit heavy and not exactly the most beautiful guitar I've ever seen, but it's as sturdy as a brick and an absolute pleasure to play. Thin neck, big frets, satin finish. Sounds great too!

I'm thinking about getting some sort of Floyd Rose-loaded Stratocaster some time though, but that'll have to wait until I have the money. SX SST57 seems nice...

With K?rspexet, I play through their Fender FM212 which you can see in the background. A pretty nice amp, but I wouldn't get one myself. I'd prefer something smaller and more articulate.

I also use it with my Digitech RP150, which is great for a digital multieffect. I do however aim to make my rig as analogue as possible, but the Digitech is probably gonna remain for quite some time.

At home, I've just got a Vox DA5 practice amp right now:

https://pic.armedcats.net/v/va/vanmould/2009/08/06/vDA52.jpg

With the AC30 look, of course ;) It does make some really great noises considering it's price and size, but I think I might have outgrown it. I hope to get myself a small tube combo or head once I've got the money. The Peavey JSX Mini Colossal seems promising. Laney's VC series also sounds brilliant, but seems to have some serious reliability problems. I'm not even close to having my mind made up here :p

Moar pics later...

The scandinavians and their hard rock  Awesome, the most heavy songs I play are duality by slipknot and a few metallica. A band I love to play is hard funk band call Rage agianst the machine the guitarist Tom Morello is a legend, he has some mind blowing riffs.

^I prefer Audioslave over RATM! :p

edit. And it METAL not hardrock.. :shakefist:

This is my Yamaha RGX620: (Can't bother taking a pic now)

I also frequently play on my old-ass Yamaha KB-200, which is so archaic I can't even find a picture of it on Google. When nobody's home, I go and play the proper piano which I think is German, but I can't remember the exact brand.

Got this back in March. Pearl Vision VBX set (2 basses, 5 toms, snare, hardware) and sort-of-cheapo-but-sounds-pretty-good Meinl MCS cymbal set (16" crash, 20" ride, 10" splash, 10" china, 14" hats). Planning to add on a couple more crashes on Saturday :)

Yes, I know it's setup incorrectly with the cymbals at stupid angles and what not. My dad doesn't play the cymbals properly, so that's how he does it :p

Birch sounds great, lots of contrast and TOMS like mad!

Do you often feel the need to go and do a :drums: whenever there's something rather stupidly ironic said around there? :)

Here are my sound makers:

A cheap Jay Turser I got off eBay just for something to mess around with and a French Besson Classic that feels like it was made for me. I love that horn.

Here are mine:

2violinsback.jpg

The one on the right was custom made for my Grandfather in 1937 by A. E. Smith http://www.adb.online.anu.edu.au/biogs/A110658b.htm. It's one of about 200 violins he made in his career, which are quite highly sought after.
It's apparently worth a fair bit, but as I never got to meet my Grandfather, the sentimental value to me is priceless.

Ideally I'd like to find an orchestra to play with locally, but there are very few that aren't professional.

The keyboard I can't play, and then lost the power cord for:

And Dad's elecrtic guitar.
S4010123.jpg

He can't play it, has no idea what it is (it used to be red and white before he resprayed it). It was given to him by a high school friend who had taken his Dad's Jaaaaaag out one night while his folks were away, to impress his girlfriend, and smashed it. It was part payment to Dad, who was the one who sacrificed the rest of his weekend to repair the car before his mate's parents got home.

german company so its decent quality for the money.

Yeah, you know the Germans always make good stuff.

I own a hollow-bodied Les Paul and a big ol' amp. Don't need anything else!
