The "New Toys" Thread

@Matt2000

Yeah, I meant to buy a new NVME SSD when they were about $90 for a 2TB Samsung 970 and I had some unexpected expenses that made me decide to delay for a bit. That was a bad idea. I should have bought 2, but nooooo, I had to be practical.

I didn't know how lucky I was when I got two 8TB 870 QVOs at £300 each and three 4TB Corsair MP600s at £165 each.

In the UK it's Prime day next month, so I would be hoping for decent deals. I took 83GB of photos the other day so I'm still short on storage...

Ordered a cheap Chinesium mini PC to migrate home assistant onto and host a simple backup and media vault NAS + plex or whatever… will have to run drives off USB, but that should be fine.

N100, 12 GB LPDDR5, 512GB nvme = 110€. Can’t complain about that. Stupidly, it’s actively cooled, but I’ll ditch it in the basement next to the also actively cooled pv inverter, so I don’t care!

… actually considering how much more powerful this is and how expensive raspis are, that’s friggin amazing!

48MP Nikon Z9 + air show = 3,603 shots. 512GB CFExpress card so lots of space still on the card. :p

Of those, 111 Selected. I'm really pleased with them actually, I'll post some in the Photography section.

Actually I forgot to say that I did get another Crucial 4TB SSD in the Prime sale, as it was a good deal and yeah I still need more storage.

Acquired a Lenovo USB-C dock from Facebook for $10. I was a couple of weeks away from dropping over $100 on one, so this was a steal.

Annoyingly, the Lenovo Legion 5 we got about a year and a half ago has two dead USB A ports. We were using a passive USB hub for a few devices, but it didn't pass through enough power for the webcam, so those two used up all of the availble USB A ports.

And when she would need to go to a site meeting, it meant unplugging power, HDMI, ethernet, external hard drive, the usb hub, audio, and with the wireless keyboard dongle precariously sticking out the back if she forgot to unplug that.

Now, it's just power, and a single USB-C.

A bummer that the laptop doesn't seem to be responding to the 100w power output from the dock. The laptop comes with a 230w. The laptop doesn't use it's full power very often, so I feel like a trickle of 100w would be enough to keep the battery full, but it just doesn't respond to the power at all.

After a false start, I finally got my hands on a DJI Osmo Pocket 3.

Amazon delivered a vase and some artificial flowers, which I've sent back but not been refunded for, so I just re-ordered the camera straight from DJI. I got a £10 voucher too which I can use for a discount on the second microphone and charging case.

I've mainly got this for a holiday later in the year, I wanted to try some filming without having to have my phone out. I previously got the Shiftcam Snapgrip to make taking photos with that easier, but recording any video is still a PITA. This camera would've been useful when I was filming caves and dolphins in Portugal last year, the result with my phone was good but I was nervous about trusting MagSafe on a boat.

Also I want to try the tracking capabilities. Tracking on the drone is great, but movement range of the gimbal is limited and then the drone will turn, which just isn't smooth. This uses a similar (slightly updated) tracking system that will track smoothly over a much wider range.

Finally got my quansheng UV-K5 (8) after several weeks. Amazing what you get for pockey money these days.

I've no idea what I'm going to use this for either, but a Radtel RT-470X came in the mail the other day. Someone clicked the Buy button with my finger.

Considering this too costs pocket money, it's really well built. Feels and looks very nice. It's also got a beefy battery. Reviewers say it's got great reception.

It's advertised as "USB-C charging" which is marketing speak for "we didn't give you a charging dock". The charging port is on the battery, which is great. It doesn't have to be attached to the radio to charge. What's not so great is that it doesn't do PD, so it won't take a charge from a slightly more advanced charger, which all of mine are. I've got to keep an old USB-A power brick and an A to C cable around just for this. This is annoying enough to be a deal-breaker.

The full color display looks nice in photos but it does not convey any information that a monochrome dot matrix LCD can't. And when the nice, shiny color display turns off to save battery, you've got no idea if the radio is on or not. i

This bullshit drives me crazy. Bloody morons who think saving a few cents on the inferior chip won’t come back to bite them in the ass… simply because the customer feels cheated or doesn’t even know that’s a thing and will RMA a unit that refuses to charge or whatever. Unacceptable.

My proper, expensive, registered and legal marine VHF doesn’t do any other kind of charging except cradle. None of the ones I found have USB or even a proprietary plug. Having to schlep the cradle around is annoying.

I guess it’s because it’s waterproof. But there should be ways around that.

... didn't even finish the bloody video. all of my yes. ordered. at 199e for the drone it's a complete no brainer. will fit my bike jersey back pocket no problem, so I'll have some fun. was waiting for this from DJI after that similar caged follow me drone thing that I can't remember the name of went through all the sports influencers last year lol
