The "New Toys" Thread

I've got a few Chinese cheapies. They keep time well enough (mass produced movements only go so far, the automatics tend to not wind enough without a bit of manual winding though) and the only quality issues I've seen are with the pins that secure the band to the case of the watch (they're not really tough enough to survive daily wear, so pick up a few spares from a local watch place) and the crystal, which is generic not-really-scratch-resistant. That said, I have gotten compliments on them when I've worn them because people do like their "fancy" or "expensive" look. Really though, you want a good Chinese watch you're essentially stuck with Sea-Gulls.

Yeah, this is replacing a Casio G-Shock (still good and amazingly still on the original battery, but I'm sick of wearing an ugly digital watch that was only cool back when I bought it when I was 11), so I'll need to be more careful. That said, I've heard from many sources that these are quite good, so we'll see.

In my opinion cheap chinese skeletons like this one:

are the watchmaking equivalent of this:

He should be ashamed of himself, an EVO needs tires like this:

Got a whole load of new toys. Discipline to save up all the cash required and my not all that great fondness of regular TV helped. I make TV (broadcast engineer) I don't watch it so there was no rush. I stayed in the same apartment I had as a student and am gradually remodeling it.

Upgraded from old (read shit) second-hand, hand-me down furniture and a tiny ancient Daewoo TV. Student dorm look out, decent comfort in :)

Panasonic TH-P42S10E, 42" FullHD 400Hz Plasma... image quality trumps power consumption, especially as I mainly use it for movies and some gaming.

Dreambox 800HD Satellite PVR, I don't watch that much TV but when I do, might as well do it in style... a pretty awesome little machine, installed a 160GB 2.5" HDD I had lying around from a laptop upgrade. Although it does play HDTV MKVs, the integrated network can't keep up with high bitrate 1080p files. No worries though, with some minor bit-shuffling the next new toy takes care of that:

PS3-80GB, might have to upgrade the HDD eventually but for now it's fine. Blu-Rays looking good, Mediatomb running on my Linux server makes this thing even better. Just finished remuxing my HDTV MKV files to M2TS, works nicely :D

Controlling all of this (except the PS3, have the Bluetooth remote for that) is a Logitech Harmony 555. Took ages to set-up and still isn't 100% but I'm getting there. Already though it is well worth the effort!

What can I say... I walked into a Lego store the other day (wanted to get some spare parts for some 20+ year old sets that I am rebuilding) and this bad boy was walking across the counter (yup, it moves!). Any measure of self control just went straight out the window :D

Finally, while not necessarily toys, the cocktail bar me and my friends set up to fully enjoy the new home-cinema experience (not 100% sure but what you are seeing there is almost worth as much as the TV - if not more)... CHEERS!

:D I've got one of those! It's the original one that doesn't have powered legs though. How does it walk?

EDIT: Checked on YouTube. Lame. :p

Urgh, all that effort, and you went and got Sierra? Upgrade that shit!

It's for mixing, not for drinking it pure! Restocking the bar is expensive enough, you don't want to spend oodles of money on the good stuff if it will be drowned out in fruit juices and other goodies!
Besides, I am not much of a Tequila fan myself, I prefer rum. The Cacique from Venezuela does that job nicely (grew up with the stuff, getting it in Germany is f-ing expensive though) ;)

Next up: a whiskey collection. Have a scottish whiskey tasting tour lined up for next spring.

dammit how come everyone's TV and entertainment area is better than mine?

That's kind of funny ;)
What do you broadcast? Can I blame you next time the picture jumps on my Bundesliga matches? Do you get to watch much of what you broadcast? Do you know that guy that has to watch all the porn before it gets aired to make sure it's legal? So many questions

I work for a company that makes pro-grade encoders, multiplexers and modulators.

If you are watching Budesliga, it is very likely that one of our machines is in the signal chain somewhere - sorry ;) .
I get to watch alot of what our customers broadcast... unfortunately mostly during the day during testing *puke* (a good exception was early morning aerobics on Anixe HD)
Yeah, I do know the guy(s) that monitor the porn :)

how do you "monitor" porn?

That sounds like the most awesome job in the world, until you actually have to do it, and you get bored of it after 2 hours...
