I'll do you one better: super-fast SSD for OS+programs and 500/750 GB HDD for data.

^is what i like in finalgear.com, a new way of combining fast'n'much.

Far cooler PC and room... double benefit!

And more storage space is incoming, just have to wait a bit first

dv7s are nice, i'm on the 1170us, word of advice, dont keep the remote in the slot in the laptop, gets mighty hot...

It's been a few days, but it's never gotten any hotter than lukewarm.

Not with hard drives. They start at $30-40 for 80 GB and each step up in size is $5-10 until you get to the 1 TB range.

^ Exactly, hard drives have always (or at least for a long time) had that "sweet spot", where you get the most bytes per dollar/euro/whatever.

That may be. I was just trying to figure out why there may be two drives, rather than one. We didn't know the specs of the drives...they might be higher-end and therefore might have been cheaper to give two smaller ones rather than one big one. *shrugs*

I'm actually a bit late in posting this, because I've had them for a few weeks now, but I recently did a bit of upgrading to my desktop:

Added a second pair of Mushkin 2GB DDR2 chips (for a total of 8GB RAM):

Installed 3 Seagate Barracuda 1.5TB SATA2 drives:
https://pic.armedcats.net/p/pa/packetcollision/2009/09/23/seagate_1.5_box.GIF

and the PCIe SATA cards to drive them:
https://pic.armedcats.net/p/pa/packetcollision/2009/09/23/satacard.gif

The drives are in a RAID5 array, so I actually only have 3TB usable space, but one drive can fail without losing data. I can also dynamically expand the array (without ever turning the computer off if I want) by adding additional 1.5TB drives. I'm loving the additional space and security (had a 1TB JBOD before that made me really nervous), and doubling the RAM means I can have several VMs running without having to use swap space, and even Firefox on a RAM binge has a hard time bringing the computer to a halt.

My iPod buds have seen better days, they still work but are getting very tatty. All the rubbers are starting to tear but they have served me well. However, since I was upgrading I wanted to get something a little bit better;

Most expensive headphones I've ever bought, but worth it so far !

erm excuse my dumbness/ not quiet super nerdness, but what is the point of having 8GB of RAM?

I understand 4, or even 6... but8

Also, 4,5 TB is a lot of porn

*sigh* Finally. Didn't want to post anything until I had it all, which finally occurred about 10 minutes ago (no thanks to FedEx Ground).

That is a drool worthy pile of parts. Are you going to assemble and test before win 7?

Assemble? Yes. Just going to grab some dinner n' shower and then start.

Test? I think I might...not sure yet. I kinda want to start it up, complete, from the virginal build. Is that lame? I might have to if I want to activate the lifetime warranty on the graphics card and motherboard, though...otherwise it's much shorter.
