The "New Toys" Thread

I just got the G25 yesterday and I really really suck driving a manual in racing games....

Should be pretty easy, unless you are not too good at driving a manual car, although its easy to miss a gear on the G25. The oke who designed the shifter should be shot in the head for using some crap/flimsy material.

And congrats on your new pc. More ram and a dedicated gfx card is what you need now

Nice monitor btw, widescreen ftw!

/\ no offence but that gear stick really looks free :D

but the phone, that looks great ;)

Actually both the shift knob and the boot were free. My friend picked me up the shift knob while he was in Hong Kong, it's a TRD Japan model not available here. I would have preferred black but a gift is a gift. The upgrade in the picture is actually the shift boot (the black part covering the base). The stock one was gray and not really leather. I sent in my old one to this company so they could make a pattern out of it. In the end I got a free boot!

I heard the Q9 keyboard was crap, is it good ?

I like it a lot. Takes some getting used to but I prefer it over the Palm Centro keyboard (tiny Chiclets buttons). I was looking at the Blackberry Pearl but I don't like Suretype (two letter per key) and the extra monthly Blackberry service fee.

Why do you have a lightbulb on your gear lever? :?

To see, of course! I might swap it out for a Tom's, but those are kinda pricey.

^ I was just gonna ask that... though in fairness it seems like his new toy is the leather skirt or whatever, not the shifter itself.

This is the truth, but calling it a skirt makes it sound a bit feminine. :(

This is my computer:

NZXT Apollo ATX Tower Black case [wish it had more fan holders, but cases are easy to upgrade]
eVGA nForce 780i A1
Intel Q6600
eVGA E-GEFORCE 8800GTS 512MB Crysis-Edition [game came free with it...lol]
Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X2048-6400C4
LG G-H20L-S10 dvd drive
Samsung 206BW
OCZ GameXStream 700watts
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB
ThermalRight ULTIMA-90 Heat Sink
Scythe S-Flex SFF21F fans

My other large toy [other than my car] is my PS3

I am currently shopping for a new graphics card (running on on-board right now) and additional memory. Loving this thing:mrgreen:

Problem solved: Newegg.com -> 8800GT

Dell Inspiron 530 + 24"
(Q6600 Core 2 Quad, 1gig DDR2-5300, 2500gb HDD x2)

The speed jump from this upgrade (even in its current state) is HUGE! I am currently shopping for a new graphics card (running on on-board right now) and additional memory. Loving this thing:mrgreen:
Only 1GB? get some more RAM if you really want to get the most out of Vista and your Quad(!!), I have about 1GB used in idle right now.........

Chilicoke, what 24" model is that from dell? (btw i love it)

I play GT2, RBR, Test drive unlimited, LFS-s2demo

I'd like more suggestions for games. I just got the G25 yesterday and I really really suck driving a manual in racing games....
It's the budget model E248WFP with TN panel, it doesn't produce the best colors but at the price I got it at I don't really mind.

Although I am really tempted to hook up my PS3 to it (GT5 Prologue) and test out it's 16:9 function.:)
Man, somebody around here hangs out at Slickdeals!
indeed :lol::lol::lol:

Problem solved: Newegg.com -> 8800GT
I was originally going to go cheap on graphics card because I barely (if any) game on computer. But after strong influence from my friend I think the 8800 (g92) will eventually be mine. :p

Yeah, I'm deal hunting at the moment

8800gts is a waste if you don't do much gaming. If you just want to do some light gaming, then $150 or less is all you need to spend.

8800gts is some serious money for serious gaming, cheapest 8800gts card is well over $200, gfx card get outdated really quickly these days. Rather spend more in the future when you have the time for games.

And now is the best time to buy DDR2 ram, they are dirt cheap. get yourself a 2 x 1gb setup, its like $40.

Also, you might want to take a look at this thread, plenty of choices there for you to pick a cheap gfx card for games -> http://forums.finalgear.com/technology/suggestions-for-a-new-video-card-26775/

I have an update on my 8800GT. Turns out that XFX accidently made some that had non vairable fans that would run at 100% 24/7 and I got one of them. So I told them about it and 6 days later I had a new heatsink/fan/shroud assembly. I just put it on and I can't believe how much quieter it is. I also added a fan to my fanless cpu heatsink and the temp went from 50C to 38C

Thanks for directing me to that thread MadCow809, I do realize that 8800GT is overkill for me, however I don't have a problem spending more if it's worth the price, I'll keep an eye out.

Meanwhile I took care of the problem of lack of speakers (it was driving me nuts!:?). I'm not really picky when it come to PC speakers as they will only be used for most videos (not for music, I have my headphones for that), I just needed to have sound for my computer. Having previously worked in retail as a summer job, I was able to pick up a set of new Logitech X-540 for basically nothing through an ex-co-worker.

Due to the way my desk is placed in my room I don't really have anywhere to place rear channel speakers, so both rear speakers and center channel remained in the box, additionally, separated wired volume controller wasn't really my cup of tea either. I ended up giving them to my sister and took back the Altec Lansing ATP4 I gave her quite some time ago, didn't realize how much I miss these until now.

Surprisingly everything worked out almost perfectly, I much prefer the ATP4s (sound & design) and my sister now has 5.1 for DVDs. That's one problem solved, next up, more ram and graphics card.<_<

 Depreciation in computer hardware is exactly why I've been using the VAIO till now, after telling myself it's not worth the money to upgrade for so long, it felt really weird buying this computer even though the price was too good to pass up. I was still debating if it was a wise choise (especially considering other stuff I needed such as speakers, graphics card, and more memory) before it arrived on my doorstep. It was TOTALLY worth it after turning it on and ran a few tasks through Photoshop, Premier, and DVD Shrink.:lol:

ohhh.. nice speakers.

Welcome to the Logitech family :D

Thanks, I do have more ram and a dedicated gfx:

E4500 @ 2.2ghz (stock, tried overclocking with 4gb ram but failed)
4gb of PC6400
MSI 8800GT 512mb OC
1.6tb of hdd space!
2007wfp IPS best viewing angle LCD ftw!!!!

woah. quite a bit of HDD space... is it for porn??

and try to increase the voltage on your ram, NB and cpu if you have OC problems.

a good set of CL4 ram should be running on 2.1v at stock setting.

As for your CPU, E4xxx can take 1.50v without any hassle, especially that the mobo automatically drops a few tenth when booting up.

Also check your ram : cpu ratio, that might be the reason why you cant push the fsb up.

Good luck

Yea I've done all possible permutations, playing with every figure and basically if i even set the mobo to something like overclock enable (ie: putting the mobo to manual settings even using default #'s...) it won't boot up. So I think there's something wrong with my mobo in the first place. I gave up messing with it since I don't notice any difference in the Sim games i play with my 8800gt and the few FPS i play. But I did notice if i bump vcore from 1.325v to 1.425 it gained like 5degrees C idle. I have proper airflow with 1 intake, 1 hdd intake, 2 exhaust, artic cooling Freezer 7 pro, and a copper pipe heatsink/fan on my 8800gt(MSI OC factory card) it still runs pretty warm. Maybe the 4 harddrive has to do with the heat. And Yes, 100gigs is for porn =) but mostly it's for Top Gear, other tv shows, and some 720p movies. And I do back up my files on multiple drives so I wont have to suffer the loss of important stuff like photos, music, and softwares.

Hm... weird. It does sound like your mobo is acting funny, since having it in manual mode doesn't change anything unless you play around with the settings.

Oh well, if you are happy the way it is, OC is not really necessary. Pity that you can't put your AC Freezer 7 Pro into the ultimate test, but at stock setting, it should cool your cpu down by quite a bit, it will only make the system last loner and more stable under load.

As for the HDD setup, is that 3 x 500gb + 160gb setup you have there? I'm about to buy a 750gb for my system, seeing as I'm running out of space for both porn and car videos :D I got over 500gb of just F1+WRC videos, and 250gb of other stuff like A1GP, BTCC, WTCC, GP2 videos etc. I can really use another few hundred gigs of space.

Broadband is really taxing on hard drives :)

Too bad your refresh rate is in the shitter though (the drawback of IPS). :p

<3 my 24" MVA. 8ms, 1000:1, 500 cd/m2 (it's a fucking flashlight), and I can literally go all the way to 90 degrees to normal with no huge impact. The only thing that happens when I go crazy with the viewing angle is the screen gets a very slight yellow hue or it looks like someone played with my gamma. :)

Dell rates yours at 178 degrees and mine has a 176 degree, heh.

lol viper, I don't feel any lag in refresh rate, and I play plenty of games. yea it's 16ms but seriously I rather enjoy the viewing angle(no hue anywhere!) than anything else. And to me it's at an optimal brightness. I bought a 24" before but it was a TN screen with 4ms and uber brightness... it was blinding me and I felt the brightness was too much and returned that LCD due to its TN-ness(once you've gone IPS or MVA, you can't go back).

Madcow809 nah I don't have that set up but I have:
3x400gb SATA
1x250gb IDE
1x200IDE.

I am waiting for a good deal on a 750gb so I can throw away these 200's... they're sitting in my computer without a fan and hitting 45C idling.

Viper, I think you're gonna be jealous when I say this..... I just bought a 24" lcd! =) I'll update with info and pics once i receive it on thursday.

Whilst we are in the spirit of posting rig specs, I spose i'll post mine which i bought just before christmas and also show off the rediculous hard drive capacity which i now posses.

Specs:

Intel E6850 3Ghz Dual Core
4gb DDR 800
8800gt 512mb
22' widescreen
5.9Tb worth of hard drives :D, 3tb i just got in the last month as i have a mate whos got like 4.77tb worth of data which i need to obtain

Also this is my first post in ages, the old LFS people may remember me.
