Hope this thread resurrection isn't in bad taste, but I finally put together a dream 10-car garage. I'll freely admit that some of my choices (the Chrysler, for one) will inspire a WTF. But there's nothing wrong with being different, so I'll proceed anyway :p. I know my writing style is a bit uh pretentious at times, so bear with me.

1) Toyota MR2 SW20
I have been enamored of this sleek and taut shape ever since I saw it in my youth; the fact that I finally have one plays no small part in this want. It is a strange admiration for Japanese "copies" of European classics that drives this interest, as this "Japanese Ferrari", the sickly Acura NSX notwithstanding, is in shape and head-turning thematically closer to the original. Its elegance lies in its overall simplicity, not relying on exaggerated accents as tacked onto its loutish uncle, the Supra, but a simple mid-engined shape with functional accents and harmonious composition.
2) Datsun 240Z
If the MR2 is the Japanese Ferrari 355, this is the Japanese Jaguar E-type coupe. Long hood, covered headlamps, and straight-six engine are unsubtle knockoffs of the British icon, but the wrapping of the fenders around the wheels makes it a much more cohesive shape than the Jaguar, which looks as if it began as a hovercraft, with wheels screwed on as an after thought. The paunchier later versions are easily distinguishable from the tightly toned original; perhaps it was entropy that laid its fingers on it, but the degeneracy of the Z-car would continue unabated for far too long. As the first and purest, the 240Z stands alone.
3) Chrysler LHS/Concorde
I find it a criminal travesty that Tom Gale has yet to be exalted among the great car designers of all time. Perhaps it is a European tendency to scorn the blue-collar American, which is precisely the nature of the Chrysler that he worked for, but his creations are easily the match of anything penned by Italian or British hands. The majority of his better works were manifest on four-door sedans, who in terms of visual presence could stand proudly beside any Jaguar. The LHS/Concorde is the largest, boldest, and closest to being brash of the tearjerkingly elegant lineup, an amalgam of curves reminiscent of linen robes on the bodies of the gods, at once soft and flowing, yet also taut and limber.
4) Dino 246
As Edsel was to Ford, Dino was to Ferrari, a favored son whose untimely death bequeathed his name to a line of his father's vehicles. Neither proved to be much of a success, and indeed Edsel became a legend in for reasons his father would have rather forgotten. Dino deserves a far greater epitaph, for the cars that bore his name, especially the Dino 246, are hailed as some of the most beautiful vehicles ever to grace this world, with a timeless elegance of the best sort that Italy ever bore. From a time when its sheetmetal curves could be openly said to be inspired by a woman's figure, this stunner took these styling cues to their most voluptuous conclusion. Magnifico.
5) 1964 Buick Riviera
It may seem strange that my only choice from the pre-muscle car era would be one of the more understated specimens of its time, as the Riviera was never the extrovert that its Cadillac, Lincoln, or Chrysler contemporaries would be. That perhaps is part of its appeal, as its lines have remained timeless throughout the decades, while the memory of its counterparts would have to be hinged on celebrity endorsements, such as JFK or Elvis; without such endorsement, the Chrysler Imperial languishes in the dustbin of history. No fins, tasteful daubs of chrome, and finely cut lines make it stand out in a sea of glitz, by virtue of avoiding the excessively outstanding.
6) 2002 Pontiac Firebird Formula
Some may be nostalgic about the progenitors of the muscle car era, and indeed the appeal of their classic lines and brash V-8s is undeniable. People tend to forget, though, that their performance figures in a straight line are no match for the modern V-6 grocery getter, to say nothing of what happens when the road gets twisty. This is why I've chosen the last of the breed that has all the right elements, which is to say the ultimate in performance, an unapologetically styled exterior that avoids shamelessly riping off the past, and a stick shift on the floor. The pants-wetting exhaust roar doesn't hurt either: think Frank Sinatra moonlighting as a drill sergeant, and you'll get a small inkling of the Firebird's bellow. If the new Dodge Charger were available with a manual, it would take this place, but alas, this was not to be.
7) Aston Martin DB7 GT
Every Aston Martin built so far with the 6.0 V-12 has been a breathtaking automotive sculpture. The DB9 and Vanquish have been universally praised for their character and styling, due in no small part to that double-Duratec dynamo. My heart has always been drawn back to the DB7, whose reputation is tarnished in the eyes of some by whispered grumblings of it being a "Jag in drag", considering its obvious visual kinship with the XK8. In my eyes though, this is far from being a drawback, as the newer Astons look annoyingly bluff and truncated at the front, an effect hardly disguised by the near afterthought of the sloping hood above the grille. The DB9, in addition, has hints of excessive girliness in its drawn-back headlights, like so many plucked eyebrows, which detract considerably from the otherwise handsome stature, as if Robert Redford were wearing mascara. The DB7, though, is eternally cohesive in its styling, and the mesh accents that come with the GT package are the snowcap on Kilimanjaro, the final touch to suck the last remnants of untaken breath from your system.
8) Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG
The first-generation E55 is noticeably off the pace of ?ts supercharged progeny, lacking that minor detail of a supercharger. Also unlike its offspring, it doesn't look like it was styled with melted wax, instead retaining sober, dignified lines that are unmistakably German. To be frank, the extra 120 HP would be held in check 90% of the time by traction control anyway, so the original E55 is plenty for a Q-ship captain.
9) Audi Sport Quattro
Rarely has a car styled with a razor blade looked this handsome. Its pedigree isn't too bad either, with its race-proven quattro system and 5-cylinder beast of a powerplant. I've only seen it once in my life, and it paused my heart for those brief instants when it drove by. Never mind the fact that it was driven by the doppelganger of a young George Lucas, whose face hair would have caused Jeremy Clarkson to burst an artery. It's one of the few cars from the classic-starved 80s that are worth desiring.
10) Lamborghini Countach LP400
Yes, I saw James May's review of it. Yes, I know it would be an Italian mistress in all its worst forms, being an absolute drain on mind, money, and attention. So what? This doesn't taint its desirability one bit, it only makes it a bit more of a handful to live with. I'd be happiest with the original model that was truest to the concept. Those fat thigh wheel arches and ass-augmented spoiler of the later versions are way too trashy, and like cheap makeup overwhelm the basic beauty of the machine. Like the 240Z, first was best. Besides, who wouldn't want those doors?

holy shit, no need to write an essay for every one of your choices, who will read that?

hehe, I wrote it for the writing rather than the reading; even if nobody takes a second glance at it, it's all good. I like writing, is all, especially when the topic is something I can put some passion behind.
