The Positivity Thread aka "Today was a great day because....."

I swallowed a pill.

So...I'm 44. I've never been able to swallow pills. I've never been able to get down a single pill, ever. There's nothing physiologically wrong with my swallowing mechanisms...I just...can't, and I don't know why.

I've tried every trick and 'hack" anyone's ever told me, I've watched hours of Youtube, I've even bought products designed to help with this, like a cup that has a little ledge in it that water can pass through so when you tilt back to drink, it will randomly "dump" the pill into the flow of water to be swallowed...none worked. I even had a...I forget the name, but a swallow test where I swallowed a radioactive substance so they could see my swallow in an x-ray-type video...but all seemed A-OK from a "physically, there's nothing wrong" perspective.

Every time I've been prescribed anything, there's always been an alternate form factor... a chewable, a gummy, liquid, pharmacy-made suspension, or a pill that I can grind up or a capsule that I can open and mix it with yogurt or apple sauce.

However, the older I get, the more complex the health issues get. And right now, I'm on a medication that has to be given in a 2-3 hour-long IV infusion session at the hospital in the cancer ward. If this doesn't "fix" me, the next option is a life-changing surgery.

If I can figure out how I did this today (and I think I know the trick that worked, but I can't take any more of this pill for a week), I may be able to take a pill treatment which we were going to try last year, but I wouldn't have been able to swallow it. I'll need to go pick up some multivitamin supplements to practice the method.

Now, to be fair, the pill I swallowed was barely larger than a Tic Tac (though just large enough that while I could swallow tic-tacs with some regularity, it was still giving me issues). It was no "horse pill" like the ones my mom takes. So I still need to work on this method to see if I can do it with larger pills...but it's giving my hope that I'll at least have another potential option for treatment, which was supposed to be more effective and faster acting than what I'm doing now. If it works, I won't need that life-changing surgery. I'm not actually particularly optimistic, but I'm thrilled knowing that I may have "unlocked" another chance at avoiding it. Now i just need to dial-in the technique, and practice it for consistency and for larger pills.

The technique: dropping it into peach Yoplait "regular-style" yogurt, mixing it in so I can't see it, and scooping up and swallowing as large of a mouthful as I can muster, while biting on my tongue sticking out the front of my mouth to keep it from pulling back in my swallow. I know it doesn't work with thicker/stickier greek yogurt, and it doesn't work with yogurts with larger chunks like cherry because my tongue wants to trap those pieces to chew, and it catches the pills.

I am at the opposite end of the spectrum. I have literally taken thousands of pills over the years.

Yeah, my mom can swallow pills a small handfull at a time, sometimes even "dry". When I told the ENT doctor about her, he said, "Well, I think we can rule out genetics as the source for your issues..."

I use the German railways a handful of times per year for business travel, and also on rare occasions for private travel. So I wanted to link the two accounts ("BahnCard 50" for business travel with 50% discount and my private "BahnBonus" account for... well, bonus points that can be spent on upgrades or free tickets) in order to accumulate the bonus points more effectively. I got an error when trying to do that in the account settings. So I opened a support case last Monday. No reaction until now. So, I called their support hotline. Yes, on a Sunday. In Germany.
The support person was very friendly and competent - she completely solved my problem. And marked the support case I opened as solved, because it was in fact in their system, but nobody had looked at it yet.
The underlying problem was a wrong birth date in my business account, apparently my company's travel team had made an error when opening my account...

And I just wanted to share this very positve experience with, of all things, the support hotline of Deutsche Bahn, on a Sunday. :)

A couple weeks ago I had to go to one of the many chemical sites in Antwerp and it was one of the few I don't regularly come so when I want to enter there our planner has to register me beforehand. While filling in dates, they apparently weren't paying attention and they entered both my day and month of birth correctly but put in 2023 as my birth year.
Although very obvious what went wrong, they refused to let me in because even though every other detail was correct I wasn't born in 2023...

I’d just like to thank everyone who is still posting here for the pretty much total lack of bullshitty whining, complaining and moaning about nothing.

Occasionally, mainly to find out about line closures, I visit a German railway forum and end up looking around. And boy do some of those people like to make mountains out of molehills… :wall:

I totally forgot how lovely and how much fun the roads in the region around Spa/Malmedy are. Even though I absolutely brought the wrong car (had to take the Isuzu D-Max since there've been some issues with trying to get the S-Max registered), just getting to my destination was pretty, charming, fun and actually relaxing.
The goal for this trip is emptying my mind and it sure looks promising so far!

...I got to experience a well thought out product: I have SKS Speedrocker clip on mudguards on my gravel bike. Today when I took the bike for a spin a tree branch got caught in the rear wheel and rotated with it. Since the mudguards are made of plastic and the struts are designed with a clipped predetermined breaking point the mudguard just bent and one of the struts disconnected. Once I came to a halt and spun the rear wheel backwards the mudguard sprung back into it's original form and I was able to reconnect the strut.

Since my employer now gives "old" monitors away. Since I'm in the IT department and we can call dibs on particular ones I scored an Eizo FlexScan EV3237 (32" 4k). This means my graphics card (Radeon RX 5500 XT) doesn't cut the mustard anymore. Of course newer and more powerful graphics cards are more powerhungry as well so I dreaded I'd need to shell out for a new PSU since my current graphics card needs "just" one PCI 8-Pin connector. I just discovered I replaced the PSU with a 500W modular one with two PCIe 8-Pin connectors at some point in the past which I didn't remember. This means I'll just need a new graphics card to feed the free monitor. :)

Probably need a new cpu to drive it 😜

Nah, the Ryzen 5 5600G is plenty for the one game I play (Wreckfest)...

should be plenty for anything, if we're being honest, unless you spend 1000+€ on a GPU or something... :|
... says the idiot who upgraded from a 4650G to a 5800x3d on a 400€ GPU. 🤦‍♂️

Went to the gym for the first time today, even though I had to admit I'm way out of shape, just the feeling that I'm working on it is really nice.

Happy for you, pal.

I just received a call that the cargobike I ordered almost three months ago is ready. I'll pick it up tomorrow since I won't be able to make it to the dealer in time today.

car go bike? will car go space?
