The Prius vs. M3 "race"

And dear God, they fling them around with reckless abandon! I guess they're convinced that they're saving the planet, so they can drive as fast as they want.
You're right! I drive five miles on an Interstate to work, and I always get passed by a Prius doing about 80 mph in 55 mph zone.
I agree - Prius drivers can be REALLY fast. Maybe its because their cars run quietly, they don't get that same sensation of speed like the rest of us do. Like, whenever I drive my brothers car (it has a 3" exhaust system) - I end up driving slower because of the loud noise it makes. If I were to drive it the way I normally drive a car - I'd look like a hoon.

Also - the electric motor in the Prius means the power seems quite instantaneous off the mark. That may be another reason why they drive so fast. Or maybe they just think they're better than all of us. Who knows what goes on in the mind of a Prius owner/driver...

Beats me...for what it's worth, though, I drove a Civic Hybrid a while back, and it really was that terrible. I hated it...I'm scarred for life...I can't imagine how unspeakably horrible a Toyota version would be...dear god...

I am, however, morbidly curious and would like to drive one and see just how bad the Prius really is. I mean, it can't be that bad.

I felt the same, then I drove one and found it got really good mileage (over 60mpg) and wasn't that bad at all.

I think its kinda funny, I don't have to deal with all the Prius controversy where I live so I'm somewhat of a spectator, but a lot people who attack Prius owners because of their smugness come off as being smug themselves. Live and let live. Or maybe I've just mellowed as I've aged and forgotten what its like to be an angry young man.

That's a very good point. However Prius owners' smugness is beyond anything. I know a person that drives a Prius to work everyday, 40 miles on the interstate. Everytime I see him, he starts talking about his car and how it is AVERAGING 65MPG. Which is very possible - even though he is in his mid 20's, inside him there is an 85 year old man driving.

Don't worry, when he does turn into that 85 year-old man, he'll buy a 911 like we all will and be that 20 year-old man inside.

We're not all going to buy 911s, it's a joke people.

Like I said, I guess I'm just lucky I don't have to deal with it. I guess they're like ricers in Bizarro world.

You just described my grandfather! My relatives all moaned about slow and careful a driver he was when younger and then he hit his sixties and became a full on car nut speed freak. When I was first learning to drive he used to take me out on the Beltway (Washington, DC) and go nuts. It didn't matter what car he had, he thrashed them all and enjoyed every minute of it. The hilarious part was he got pulled over so often many of the local cops knew him by driving style and they would pull him over to talk...what tires you running on this, how does this Dodge compare to your last GM and then forget to give him a ticket. The guy was shredding tires on the streets and beating up cars and everyone thought he was insane, or the coolest old guy...just depended on your pov and whether you get "the car thing"
as gran put it.

One of the guys in the local Corvair club bought a Prius, the same time I bought my XJ. He's a leftist/socialist/communist, and was desperately looking for something to criticize on my car. When we left one meeting, he pulled out of the lot behind me and floored his Prius, running it "up my trumpet". So I floored my car and the Prius quickly got smaller in my rearview. Much smaller.

One of the things I can't stand about the car is how ugly it is. It's as though the designer was trying to copy a Saab 9-3, but suffered from "Picasso-itis". And some of the Prius owners wear the car's ugliness as a badge of pride. "See how I'm suffering to save the planet?"

Ironically, these are the same people who would never deprive themselves of air-conditioning or iPod-ready stereos, or they would be on motorcycles. After all, there is suffering, and then there is suffering.

Thank God I never see Priuses close to home. That would drive me nuts.

But you're right, every time I see one on the highway they're always buzzing along at 85+ like they think they are entitled to go faster because "they're more economical".

And I think going faster in that tin can must be more, um, not exciting.... yes, terrifying is the one I'm looking for. They look like they have the stability of a paper mache bridge. And they look like they'd self-destruct if you hit anything decently solid at over 30MPH...

Don't get me started on fish-people. Although, I'm going to start keeping an eye out for a Prius with a fish. I hope I see one. So I can laugh at them.

Hey! I have one of these proudly displayed on the rear end of my car.

Wait, why would a "leftist/socialist/communist" be a member of a Corvair club?

Those cars attract a diverse, ecclectic sort. Well, not that diverse. Other than myself and one or two others, they tend to be quite... old.

Actually, I don't think he's a full-on communist. He's probably just another American liberal, someone for whom feeling good about oneself is more important than whether their ideas actually work. He's obviously bought into the Al Gore fear-mongering bit.

That still doesn't make any sense why he has a Corvair and is in a club dedicated to such. Is he waiting for somebody to throw a copy of Unsafe at Any Speed at his head or something? (No matter how inaccurate that book is and no matter how much of a dick Nader is.)

P.S. do post pics of said Corvair.

Can someone do a calculation of just how much the Priuses will ruin nature once they become decomissioned?

Seriously, all the acid and other dangerous stuff from those cars, where will it go?
If it can be recycled, what procedures harmful to the environment will the recycling require?

He also has a 1965 Monza convertible.

I'm always happy to share pics of my 'Vair. Here it is, a 1963 700 sedan (saloon):

^ Porsche license plate?

On the Prius subject, there's not much of those as far as I can tell. Don't see them much.

It's very quiet.

The last part is very true, according the the lastest VCA fuel consumption book the average Prius costs ?880 over 12000 miles where a Citroen C4 1.6 HDI costs ?982 over the same distance. Thats only a ?120 saving!! But then take the vehicles cost into account, in the UK Prius is about ?18000 where the C4 is yours for around ?13000. The Citroen produces 120 co2 g/km and the Prius does 104 co2 g/km, just goes to show that the "green" label doesn't really stick well. Oh the Citroen does 60mpg as well.

How sad that the Greens typically overlook the facts on the subject in their rush condemn everyone for not following their lead.
