.. and the GTI petrol engine swapped in would make it very quick.
(And probably lethal too. :p)
That being said, as far as I remember swapping a petrol engine in a diesel Rabbit and the other way 'round is a PITA.
 
I support the MR TDI idea too, but I'd go for the AVF engine. ;)
I've been told by a great many people to avoid the PD engines to make my life easier.
 
They rattle a bit more, but they're indestructible and dat power, yo!
 
When I was shopping for an Octavia the salesman lent me a brand new TSI demonstrator before I had a chance to go in the one I really was looking at, a nicely specced 2008 with the 2.0 PD and DSG6. After the TSI, it felt like it was powered by a jackhammer. :lol:

But you really can't go wrong with a 1.9 PD for reliability.
