Chrysler will substantially upgrade its unloved Sebring saloon in North America later this year, including a relaunch under a new name.

Set to reach dealerships in the fourth quarter, the Chrysler 200 will gets significantly overhauled styling over the Sebring, including new front and rear ends incorporating new headlight, bumper and grille designs.

The Chrysler 200 will be offered with a 2.4-litre petrol engine mated to either a four-speed or six-speed automatic gearbox. A new 279bhp, 260lb ft V6 petrol engine will also be offered mated to a six-speed auto? ?box.

The chassis has been upgraded over the Sebring, too, to offer a softer ride. The suspension geometry has been revised, while NVH levels have all been reduced.

Interior upgrades include more soft touch materials and new instrument and centre console designs.
The shots don't look as good as this

but it's an improvement...except one thing.

4 SPEED AUTO. I hope that's a joke on Autocar's part.

Not bad. Not pretty, but not bad. A step in the right direction, I think.

But be honest, they should show the car with 24" spinners and chrome grills, as they will mostly appear in the wild.

I think the 4-speed auto is going to be a fleet special, like the current Sebring, err, range.

As for the car, it's not like it could be worse, could it? Though that's what I said last time, and yeah...

4spd auto? Seriously? On the outside it looks pretty decent. Still though, I doubt I'd want one because it is just a boring middle-of-the-road Chrysler which is a boring middle-of-the-road brand. Unless a sport model with 300bhp comes out it will be lost in the sea of hire cars and corporate fleets.

The Fusion and anything from Japan that isn't badged a Toyota is just superior. And frankly minus the Fusion the new Hyundai is more appealing than even the Japanese now.

I should point out the picture is of the 200 concept, the actual car hasn't been fully relased, just a few teasers as far as I could find. To be honest, all I could focus on in the info was the four speed auto.

This is a much needed bandaid until the FIAT based cars roll in. It's not good, but it's better than the Sebring.

The base-base model 4cyl supposedly comes with a 4sp auto.. the 6sp auto on the high end 4cyl is supposedly the new dualclutch unit (automatic manual) and the 6sp auto on the v6 is a normal automagic.

Or so i've read from allpar.

With the chassis being the same as the Sebring...I don't have great hope for it being good. All I can hope for is that they at least make it ergonomically acceptable, there's nothing more uncomfortable than sitting in a Sebring seat.

So does part of Chrsyler's rebuilding strategy involve going European and ditching names for numbers and letters?
It's not like "Sebring" was a hallowed name, but American cars should have cool names.

Yeah, I hate alpha-numeric names on cars. There's nothing wrong with the name "Sebring" itself. They have just been putting it on crap cars for too long.

Obviously I do not buy cars solely on name...

Last time I heard the Chrysler brand will start using the Lancia names after the two become one.
