TIL the term "flying saucer" was never meant to be a description of a UFO's appearance by the person who first used "saucer" to describe UFOs.

In 1947, the man who described a UFOs with the word "saucer" never meant that what he saw looked like a flying saucer. When a reporter asked him to describe how the UFOs moved, he stated they "flew erratic, like a saucer if you skip it across the water". The reporter used the term "flying saucer", and from that point on, people began regularly describing UFOs as "flying saucers".
