The "Things that annoy me" thread

I remember having to do it with my office's old Xerox workcentre 4260. Could've been how the phone system was set up.

Just tried it with the leading 9. Same result. Tried 1-area code-number, 9-1-area code-number, area code-number, and 9-area code-number.

My old company's code to dial out? 8. No, not 9...fucking 8. It would be like Pepsi randomly changing the caps on one of it's varieties of soda to reverse-thread for no reason. Nobody expected it, and someone kept removing my label-maker labels on the unit that mentioned the need to dial 8 because it "didn't look nice".

8...fucking 8. Who does that?

Faxed my dad as a test, it worked with and without the 9. I blame this gov't office.

Your dad has a fax machine?

They did that for a while here because Coke had registered the twist cap.
It didn't last long, but it was annoying.

Two things happened today that were overly frustrating.

1. Wanted to get my Mustang back on the road. Called my insurance company, took it out of storage, got the proof that I did. Drove 20 minutes to the closest DMV open on a Saturday to get the car re-registered. Got there about 10 minutes before they closed and got in the 1hour+ line. No worries, they allow everyone who is in line before closing to be serviced. 5 people before my number was called (an 45 minutes after the official closing time), they made an announcement that the credit card machines were down. Obviously a bunch of people got pissed off including myself and started asking about getting their check books from their cars or to the ATM at the corner gas station. The manager of the office flat out said no, because state rules say that no one may enter the facility after the official closing time. There were still plenty of people waiting in line, and its not like anyone new would be let in. The security guard could just make sure that people coming back in were the same ones that went out, but nope. I tried to reason with the manager that yes, the state has rules, but this is clearly an exception - we were there before closing, we were ready to pay, and just needed 3 minutes to go get an alternative form of payment because the office failed, but nope. Was planning on washing the car and getting it ready for spring/summer today since its the first good day of the season, but now it will have to wait at least another week (unless I can make it to an office during work hours).

2. I opened up an insurance policy on my fianc?es engagement ring a month or so ago for our collective piece of mind. They asked for a bunch of documents, which I uploaded to the document center on their policy, and paid for the premium. Great. Forgot about it until now. Standing in line at the DMV, I got an email from the insurer saying a new document was uploaded to my account by the company. Logged into my account and saw a letter saying my coverage application was rejected because I failed to provide the appropriate documents and that if I had any questions, I should contact them. No more details. Checked all the archived communications and didn't see anything from them requesting more info. I called the number in the letter and get a voice message that the company is closed today. The letter was dated with today's date. What the hell?! Either someone is there working in the corporate office, or they scheduled the note to go out on a day when they weren't open with a message that said I should call them. Great service guys. I called my auto insurance company since they were the ones that referred me to the jewelry insurer to see if they had a back door phone number, but they said that they were just getting a busy signal when they called. Fantastic.

I actually leave reg/insurance on the mustang and wagon through the year to avoid a similar scenario(line too big and they close or some snafu comes up) Also, the closest DMV is 45 minutes away on a Saturday.

Can't you do it all online yet?

I don't unregister the Mustang or Miata on purpose. But in Michigan, in order to register your car, you must have insurance that meets state minimums on the car. Storage insurance does not, so I can't reregister the cars until I reinsure them for driving. And since MI does registration expiration on your birthday, mine lapses in February every year. This leaves me 2 options, reinsure it in February to reregister them without driving. Or let the registration lapse and reregister them in the spring (after paying a registration late fee). People who are born in the spring-fall don't have to deal with this bullshit. Putting the Mustang and Miata into storage saves me $130/mo, so its a no brainier.

In theory, yes, but because at the time my registration is due, the cars don't have road-minimum insurance, the system doesn't let me choose it. Last year was the first year where the state would actively query the insurance database and prevent me from registering. But its a one way query, if the system sees that your insurance falls below the minimum, your online renewal gets shut off, but it doesn't get turned back on after bringing it back up to where it needs to be. Two years ago, it let me pay the registration fee, I got my new tabs, then a few weeks later I got a letter from the state saying that because I registered the cars without proper insurance, my Mustang and Miata plates were being revoked (with no refund). I believe I ranted about that somewhere on FG. But basically, I could not pay a penalty to reinstate my plates or anything, and had to get an all new plates for a 2nd registration fee that year. I don't understand why I can't register my cars and not drive them. If I were to get pulled over driving on storage insurance, fault would be on me. But not allowing me to get tabs while the cars are in my garage is ridiculous.

For a state with arguably the best automotive culture in the country, there really is no provision for people who store cars over the winter.

Applied for a passport. What a nightmare of a process.

5.5 hours at the only post-office in the area to take walk-ins because the only appointments available are after when we'd like to travel and the Passport Agency won't even see you unless you already have travel lined up and you are travelling within 30 days.

5.5 hours at the post office. The post office closes at 2, but they turned off the HVAC at noon. Then at 2:00pm they closed all the doors so there's no airflow. All of the people left near the end are families with young children who are all annoying as fuck after having to wait for 4+ hours (and then taking super long when their number is called because they are applying for 3-6 people...the number I pulled was 131 numbers past the number they were currently serving. Even with 5 desks working, at one point they went 21 minutes without moving up a single number), bathroom breaks only every 30 minutes because they have to escort groups to the employee restroom.

The worst part, though, was the copier. Any time one of the employees needed to photocopy either a birth certificate or driver's license (because people are idiots and can't read that they needed copies of these things), they needed to walk all the way across the whole space to the copier...and they walked so...damn...slow. Just put the copier ANYWHERE near the desks! Jesus...it was agony.

Unrelated:

A co-worker recommended a Mexican restaurant. When I asked why they recommended it, the answer was, "It's not too spicy!"

Still beats : 'it's cheap' or even : 'it has a play area for kids'

In Germany we have seasonal number plates, you can choose a validity period between 2 and 11 months, for example from April 1st to October 31st or October 1st to April 30th. The plates have two additional smaller numbers on them which indicate the start and the end month of the validity period. That way you don't have to deal with the registration office twice a year if you want to use a car only in the summer or only in the winter, you have to store the vehicle on private property outside of that valitity period though. The insurance and taxes are of course lower, but the insurance is valid for the months outside of the validity period as well, but only if the car is on private property and it gets stolen, vandalized or something similar. Incidentally that regulation has been instated almost exactly 20 years ago, on March 1st 1997.

That sounds brilliant.
