The Trump Presidency - how I stopped worrying and learned to love the Hair

Trump on the late 1700 airports...

He didn't really think that through, he just uttered whatever he had in mind, because the important thing is to speak, to convince, to please and charm; there is no need for him to check if what he is actually saying is right, or wrong, or even plausible.

This is how he goes on in everything he does. Charm and gut feelings are important, facts are not, and he does not understand all those people criticizing him for the lack of factual accuracy; he probably believes they are nuisances, envious people cherry-picking everything he does and says to come up with what he believes are unimportant details.

That is how he works, how he goes on, how he acts, probably all the time.

This is another sign of why he suddenly becomes terrible when facts, figures and subtlety actually matters.

Sounds like you describing AOC

What does she have to do with Trump thinking there were airports in the 1700s?

I have no idea if that's the case. Maybe it is, I have never studied her in any way to be able to draw conclusions on her.

I haven't because she is not relevant to this matter in any way whatsoever.

Terrible public speaking isn't the point, being so disconnected from reality that he managed to mix up two entirely different wars and having no concept of linear time is far more problematic than public speaking. This is a window into how Trump's brain works, he's not living in the same reality and yet, he's the one sitting in the White House.

Nothing but not caring about facts and going with feelings is very much on brand for her.
Sorry, what does that have to do with Trump thinking there were airports in the 1770s?

Or maybe you guys are reading far too much into things that aren't actually there. Of course this is the sad result of hyperpartisan politics. It drives people crazy to the point where they themselves lose touch with reality and start subscribing to any conspiracy theory that reaffirms their political beliefs.

I think Trump is an imbecile, at times, but I think it's far more likely that he simply fell into his bread-and-butter rhetoric about the military, rather than he actually believes the US Air Force took part in the revolutionary war.

This.

So we've gone from "He's a stable genius playing 4-dimensional chess and no mere mortal can possibly divine the calculus of the god-emperor" to "He's an idiot who tells people what they want to hear, but he's not that bad since he's my idiot" :ROFLMAO:

I was curious to see how this was going to get spun, and I'm not disappointed. Are his supporters really going to stick to the argument that we should ignore what we've seen and heard with our own senses? It was a year ago that Trump himself said, “What you’re seeing and what you’re reading is not what’s happening” (Veterans of Foreign Wars national convention, Kansas City, July 2018 - just in case you want to check.)

Orwell's 1984:
The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.

Step 1: Deny - "that's not what he said"
Step 2: Deflect to whataboutism - in this case AOC (who, if this trend continues, is probably going to be the new go-to instead of Obama.)
Step 3: Rationalize and Justify - "He just got carried away" "It was taken out of context" "He was appealing to his base" "He's under a lot of pressure from... (see Step 4)"
Step 4: Blame - "The media is out to get him and misrepresented what he said" "He was baited into saying that" "It was his writer's fault"
Step 5: Minimize - "It wasn't that bad." "It doesn't matter anyway" "We have bigger problems" (see Step 2)

By then he's stuck his foot in his mouth again and the cycle repeats.

See my edit, specifically Steps 2 and 5.

Citation please.

Is anyone claiming he didn't say what he said? This is about interpretation. And if you think your interpretation that Trump truly believes the American Revolution was fought with fighter planes is definitive and unquestionable, then your ego is nearing that of our President's.

He's a showman and he makes these blunders all the time. He was praising the armed forces and got carried away (as he typically does).

This is EXACLY what happened.

Except, this is how he goes on about everything. And this is why he gets owned each and every time strategy, subtlety and between-the-lines are part of the game.

I wouldn't have him on my debate team but in terms of achievement he is kicking ass, while the democrats slide further and further to the extreme left.

This is laughable.

Earlier this year he pushed us into the longest government shutdown in history, and the first ever to be initiated by the executive branch. It was also the first time that we had a shutdown under a single party controlling both Congress and the White house - and we've had three of them so far under Trum. Most recently he wanted his wall funding. He still doesn't have it.

His only legislation of any significance was a tax break for the upper class that had negligible impact on 60% of Americans. Even if you call this a win - it's his only win.

He promised to protect Medicare and Social Security - and then proposed cuts to both programs (554 Billion in cuts to Medicare, over $72 Billion in cuts to Social Security)

He's managed to sabotage the ACA and now we have fewer people insured than we did at the beginning of his term in office.

The economy - Corporate profits are up, the stock market is volatile, and the middle and working class saw a net pay decline in Q1 of 2019. So, going well there. Before you say that the President has little to do with the economy, Trump himself has used the economy as a yardstick of his success - so I'm only holding him to his own standard. Oh, and he was the one who promised to a $4,000 pay raise for the typical US family. He also promised corporations would use their tax cuts to raise wages and save jobs - nope, stock buybacks and overseas expansion.

Tax cuts for the middle class - nope, a tax hike by 2027

He promised to lower prescription drug prices. Nothing there.

He put three of his associates with no experience in charge of the VA - and the quality of veteran care has dropped significantly. They barely spent 1% of the money allocated to informing veterans about suicide and mental health programs.

The CFPB made it harder for regulators to protect military service members from predatory lending and finance practices.

Concentration camps are now a thing in the US for the first time since World War II.

Family separation has been denounced by nearly every nation and declared a violation of human rights by the UN.

His trade wars have not accomplished any of his stated goals, but have seriously damaged our relationship with our allies.

He severely damaged US credibility in pulling out of the Iran Nuclear Deal.

Globally, more people than ever see the US as a threat under Trump's administration.

Trump withdrew the US from the Human Rights Council.

Trump claimed to have denuclearized North Korea - which is still building new missiles and testing them. He rewarded Un by being the first US President to step foot in North Korea.

Trump rejected our own intelligence services and allied himself with Saudi Arabia after their agents murdered and dismembered Kashoggi.

"Drain the swamp" has turned Washington into a cesspool of open nepotism.

As of the start of 2019, Trump has told more demonstrable lies than any president in history, averaging about 15 lies per day for a total north of 7,600

I'm not even going to get into the Russia investigation or Russia's interference in our elections to benefit Trump.

Obstruction of justice. I mean, we fucking have him on video admitting to obstructing justice multiple times.

His administration has successfully produced the most indictments, convictions, and guilty pleas since Nixon - so congrats on that one.

He threatened Mexico with tariffs, and Mexico placated him by agreeing to do something they already agreed to do months ago. - Trump called it a success and took a victory lap despite gaining nothing.

His handling of the strike against Iran shows the utter dysfunction of his administration and him as a leader. He either is toying with starting a major war simply to play with his executive powers, or his administration is fractured and working against itself from within - either is a failure of his leadership and ability.

He promised to bring down the trade deficit "as fast as possible" - it's at an all-time high.

In 2016 he said he would eliminate the national debt in 8 years - the debt has ballooned under his administration.

How about the little stuff - he paid off a porn star to keep quiet about his affair, she went public - he tried to get a book squashed, it went to #1 on the NYT best seller list on pre-orders alone.
