The Ultimate macOS Thread

:dunno:

I've got a 2011 iMac which currently is hooked up (well, figuratively) to a Logitech MX Performance. I used a MX518 before that. No problems, ever.

Of course I'd get a Mac that doesn't "just work" lol

Never had that happen on our iMacs, and we plug everything we can in them.

I should also add that I've owned (or own) a Powerbook G4, a pre-unibody Macbook Pro, a 13-inch Unibody Macbook, two 13-inch Macbook Airs and a Mac Mini. :p Never ever had a problem with USB peripherals.

As a mac user, you might have to skip the 59 euro printer and go for the 79 euro one with Mac drivers. Unless you googled and found out that the cheaper model works anyway, of course. Normal cheap keyboards and mice always work. Doesn't matter who made them.

As an Amiga user, what?

In that case I'll swap out the kbd and mouse, re apply the energy saver policy we've pushed via Casper and give it a go.

If it doesn't work I'll call Apple support because even though I'll likely disable the energy saver policy again so I can remote in, the machine has to be in perfect condition in case it goes elsewhere.

Since everyone is digging up old threads, how about this one too?

These new Apple Silicon Macs are really tempting me. I was set on getting a 27" iMac, but the new Mac mini pretty much beats the current one in pretty much everything I need it to (mostly compile times, photo editing, etc.).

Also, my 2018 13" MacBook Pro has been such a piece of shit that I can't wait to not have to deal with it daily.

admittedly, I necroed Threads because new threads didn’t seem to bring posters and old as fuck threads have. Just frustrated with the political forum getting all the attention.

I would give it a model update before jumping. Right now it’s like the 2006 MacBook Pro. Probably ok, but it will get better after a revision.

They are tempting, but yes. It's perhaps prudent to wait for the second generation of these before committing to one unless you are ready to do a very quick upgrade cycle for it or you understand they should still be treated as an "open beta" device. Akin to the Apple Watch Series 0 or the original iPad.

The way I see it, I need a new computer now and buying a new Intel mac at this point seems silly if we look back at the PowerPC transition and the two years of support they got after the transition was over.

There’s also the fact that I’d very much like to try the apps I work on on the new hardware.

This just looks like a rip off lmao:

In other news, after adding "mac guy" to my duties at the school a year or two ago, I think i've found what I want to specialize in. I'm working on my Jamf 100 now (know the material just need to finish up and confirm my knowledge/fill in gaps).

My plan is to find a Mac/iOS Admin or MDM specialist position elsewhere soon. I cannot wait.

You’d have to have really special requirements to buy an x86 MacBook Air right now. Or maybe uninformed enough to buy one from a TV ad.
Pretty much this.

I'm very close to ordering an M1 MacBook Air with 16GB ram and 1 TB storage. The only thing holding me back is that I originally wanted something smaller and more portable, preferably in the shape of the old 11" MacBook Air or the 12" MacBook that they sadly just discontinued in 2019.

It will replace my trusty old (late 2010) 13" MacBook Air, with it's Core 2 Duo, Nvidia 320M, 4 GB of ram and 256 GB SSD storage. Did a battery test the other day and it managed a little over 3 hours doing some web browsing typing e-mails, but mostly watching content on YouTube. Keeping in mind it's still on it's original battery, that isn't too bad.
