Clarkson: The Weekly Times Comment Column by Jeremy Thread

I was away so I begged my mammy to save Jeremy's articles from the Sunday Times, just read them today :) so glad he's back!!

So true.

Where I work, we have this one older security guard, who has to be over 80 and cant weigh more than 115lbs.

Nice guy, but he can't walk very well, so he drives around the warehouse in a little scooter thing. And runs into things because his sight is so bad.

But...ah well.

I did security for a few months. It's a hateful job, with lots of idiots running around who think themselves important. The movie Observe and Report is a fairly accurate depiction of what it's like to work in security. It's unfortunate that the movie didn't take place in a corporate office building. It is very rare that a security guard face down an armed assailant. If I had though, I'm certain I'd have begged him to shoot me in the forehead so that I wouldn't have to spend anymore time harassing people I'd have rather left alone, and waiting for the hours to pass so that I could go home. Of course, I'm tempted even now that I'm not a security guard, to do that to myself. So perhaps that is a bad analogy.

I'm a prisoner escort which is sort of akin to security and without doubt the worst prisoners are the ones who think the rules don't apply to them. The middle-class executive who's fiddled his taxes who doesn't see why he should be handcuffed, who tuts and rolls his eyes and acts like you're more stupid than a blade of grass for daring to treat him the same as everyone else. Security wouldn't be very good if only the people who looked like criminals were targeted. Just take a deep breath and let them do their job because the next middle-class executive they stop, just might have a grenade under that posh suit.

Providing we're willing to shill out the ?1/~$2 USD for one day (or ?2/~$4 USD per week) to read both columns (keep in mind this will apply to his motoring column, too). Which I'm not.

This is a terrible business model, IMO. Not to mention prices are bound to go up at some point, once it's well in place. Sigh.

I think you will only have to pay once to read both his columns as they are but on line on the same day.

Which adds up to ?52/year (approx $104 USD), just to read two columns a week for an entire year. If they had a per month or a per year rate, it'd be more appealable.

I knew this was coming, and as much as I enjoy his columns in the Times (as well as some of the other articles), the price is pretty steep. So it'll be "buh bye" in June. *sigh*

No one read my earlier post then? Murdoch wins again. ...

I think it's more of a case of "read but forgot about it" than "didn't read it".

Grr at Murdick.

I know JC's columns can sometimes be fairly topical, but I think I'll just have to wait for the book. I'd sooner have the book where I can read the articles at my leisure anywhere and anytime. However I'm sure some intrepid internet user somewhere will ensure his columns are made available at prices that are more agreeable with my wallet, ie, $0.

Oh, I'm sure someone will put them out there for free. 'Tis the nature of the internets, after all.

I'll be waiting another anthology, too.

Oh I expect so. Someone who works in the media I imagine....
*coughs* ;)

The estimable LindenChase provides a scan of James' Telegraph column most weeks. I'm sure someone on this board could do the same for JC's columns if they felt it was important. (Oh, and it's ?104 per year, not ?52, so about $170.)

How do you figure 104 GBP per year? It's 1 GBP for the entire paper, not per article.
