There really IS one of everything in Dallas

yeah, i dont' hear about a lot of our military vehicles ending up in the US. Like the Mercedes G wagon is concidered a luxury car there from what i understand.

WHile we get some very spartan ones here that's seen military service :p

I was looking at a barebones 80s grey market 300GD when I was buying my Jeep, but decided that it probably wouldn't be the smartest idea.

huh, cool. so there's bound to be a proper off-road g-wagon in the US somewhere then? as all the US shows i see, is driving some luxury barge edition with a V8 of the g-wagon offroad, and keep sayign that if they weren't so expensive they could be good offroaders, but people are afraid of damaging them becuase they're expensive. :p

Probably wouldn't have, they're slower than walking most the time.

Yes, there's two for sale in Dallas Craigslist (but I don't think they're actually in Texas) right now.

The '02-on trucks are all official Mercedes imports, are luxobarges and command stupid price tags. However, because of the limited importation, even a total stripper gray market G-wagen (like the first link above) could easily hit six figures at the height of the market due to the low volume and stupid high demand in the wake of the Mercedes Law all through the 90s.

Yup, there are a few floating around.

And this company seems to have been set up to import them http://www.g-mercedes.com/inventory-for-sale

EDIT: Sniped by Spectre. Neither of the ones that you posted with the watermark isn't local to you. I found those listings on a ton of CLs across the country. They're from the g-mercedes site.

Luckily most of those G-wagens are on the NHTSA exemption list for non-conforming vehicles so they can be brought over here fairly easily without needing to wait for them to be 25 years old.

they still seem expensive over there though, 16k USD for a plain white stock looking one? and that's the cheapest one?

It's actually weird when a car costs more in the US than in Norway :p

This one is $5670 USD

Supply and demand. Not all that many were imported to the US by Europa, which was the only legal source between 88-01. They weren't a terribly popular import during the pre-Mercedes Law era; in fact, SUVs as a whole weren't all that popular. However, the Mercedes Law hit just as the SUV boom started to get its full stride and the then-growing demand exploded exponentially. Yes, the G-wagen still commands somewhat of a premium - because even now that you can get one easier with the 25 year barrier being past, it's still going to cost you $10-15K in fees to import one from Europe. The prices of the few we have here reflect that.

I'd bet Germany would have ones even cheaper, cars are cheap in Germany. Norway is one of the most expensive countries to buy a car in. It's why it's weird to me when a car is cheaper here than somewhere else :p

yeah, it's why 70's US cars can be pricey here i suppose, less of them about here.

See addendum to above - even if someone in Europe were to give an American one for free it will generally cost them $10-15K to import it legally. The ones already here have a price tag that reflects this.

This past weekend, some of the Dallas contingent took RdKetchup to a local indoor shooting range. I was reminded that the ex-UKanian military man who owns the range had a few interesting military vehicles that he kept in the parking lot:

First, his military Series Land Rover:

His Humber Pig, which I suspect saw service in Northern Ireland:

I'm not sure what type this is and I forget what make it is plus I can't read the badging in the picture. I'll go back by the range later and check it again.

That Humber Pig is really mean looking. I love those things.

The Other truck is, from what I understand, an Oshkosh Oil field or airport refueler chassis.

Was rolling past a automotive area and spotted these.

1991 Honda Beat that unfortunately someone seems to have run into.

Cadillac for scale:

And this is what's behind the Cadillac - a JDM Toyota MR2, the supercharged variant. It *says* it's a Super Edition, but I'm not so sure; there's a number of discrepancies from what little I know of the Super Edition not least of which being the paint color and the interior parts. Still, in stunningly good condition and mostly tastefully modified.

Forgot this one: 1951-1955 Mercedes W187 "220":

Speaking of G-wagens. I have yet to see one of these:

^since those were only made for the french army, and never sold to the public, i think most people are yet to see one (i haven't either)

Well, I guess public is really shocked that they never wanted to sell one to him as (I think) he is quite fond of Peugeots.

Remember this Mercedes?

I managed to get some better pictures of it this evening. Closer viewing shows it's not in very good shape.

Then there's this European refugee that from its plates made it in before the Mercedes Law went into effect. It would appear to be a 1984 Alfa Romeo Sprint. Didn't most of these rust out and vanish from Europe years ago?

It's surprisingly clean and intact inside.

The shop where I saw this had other questionable and Italian (but I repeat myself) vehicles.
