If I remeber correctly, he like the smaller engined 1-series handled, so do you guys think that he would like the 130i since it does have more power, BMW handling, and rear wheel drive, all in a five door hatchback package, which would be cool to see as a three door.

i think it's still going to be :bmwpoo: in his books. the biggest problem they pointed out in the top gear review of the 1 series in general is the overwhelming price. i don't know if a more powerful engine is going to be enough to overcome that.

He'll still say it doesn't have a boot, interior space, and point out all the lack of convinience items that are in other hatches priced much less. It like a new reincarnation of the Z3 hatchback. Not a family hatch, but one for the young office executive that likes its small size.

Come on, he LOVED the new Golf GTi. There's no way a 130i or any 1-series would win him over. I don't think they make an M-version of this hatch since that name is already taken by a legend.

i think with 260 hp is much powerfull then GTI, really fast car and with that small size will be briliant, laso for drifts, i think will be great comparison in new Top Gear show - 130i,new focus St,Alfa GTA ...

Gents,

This is the last two paragraphs from Jezza?s column in the Sunday paper, which I bought in a moment of boredom over a weekend a month or two ago.

He?s reviewing the BMW 1 Series.

?I have been accused, in recent years, of having it in for BMW. There was even some talk, after my recent review of the dreadful X3, that I would not be allowed any more press demonstrators. And this is why I?ve devoted the entire column this week to a test of the 1-series rather than tagging it on the end of a rant about cheese.

And it?s why I?m choosing the words for my conclusion with even more care than usual. So here goes. The 1-series is crap.?

LOL! U gotta love his humour!

It'll be a "hot hatch", it'll be at least mentioned or checked out by top gear, but just a bigger engine won't make up for the parts that are wrong in that car. So, I think no, Jeremy won't like it.

Pricing alone will throw it well over the Golf GTi i prosume? He doesn't like the 1-series for sure and any excuse to head back to their Car-of-the-Year GTi will be thrown up in any x-test.

Comparing the 130i to the GTI isn't really fair.

A better comparison will be to the upcoming Golf R36 - the 290HP 3.6L version.

Clarkson is not going to like the 130 whatever engine they plonk in it. He has a major whine about BMW. And anyway half the time he really does have a point. Will putting a bigger engine really overcome all other negatives and make this car a winner !? Its not exactly a M3 CSL kinda car where you are happy with a rudimentary interior... ;) :D

Personally, I have feeling that he would like it, when looked from a performance perspective. But I agree with you guys that the price is a major issue esspecially when looking at hatchbacks. I think that there will be that group who would buy the 130i because of the performance. It's just a richman's hatchback.

Funny you should compare GTI to the BMW 1

IMHO it's an outrage you get a better feel of interior quality in a VW than a BMW
and thats exactly what happened to me. It has to be said that it wasn't a top model but that sholdn't happen with the base one.

Whats really sad is that the new 3 series looks to be growing not only in size but also in cheapness.

I Know that many people here, are Hardcore Top Gear fans. And they are fanatic about Jeremy Clarkson.

But, let's not forget the New Vauxhall Astra VXR with 2.0 16V Turbocharged and 240 Bhp.

It will cost around ?19.000 and it does 0 to 60 in 6s and reach a Top Speed of 155 Mph.

The only thing, that really made me worries me, about this car, it's the amount of power going through the Front Wheels.

Clarkson once said, when testing the SAAB 9-5, that the absolute limit for FWD Car is 220 Bhp. Even so, he liked the SAAB and he said, the car was Nice to Drive apart of the Torque Steer.

This Astra has 240 Bhp...but it has the suspension designed by Lotus.

Let's see, if this Astra will handle all this power without a good Four Wheel Drive System.

Best Wishes. :)

I've wanted that astra ever since I first saw pictures of it. Looks so nice.....

The biggest concern that the top gear crew has about the one series is the fact that BMW has gone down in quality by SO much. And it is obvious, if you sit in any new model, ie the E60 5 series, or the facelift X5, or just about any mid price range bmw, you will notice the shoddy quality, the gray plastics, and the quality of the plastics.. ( ever seen the bumper on the X3? ) The 1 series shows off this new "Bmw" quality as well.. If the brand kept up to its past standard in quality then im pretty sure the 1 series would have gotten a Much better verdict.

Juat a random fact for ya - there is a company over here that i read about in a magazine that specialises in making and developing rally cars and they say that they have come up with a solution to torque steer. I cant remember exactly what it is but apparantly a few big names such as Volkswagen, ford and vauxhall are very interested in it and if al goes well this could even be included into new cars.

It's not only BMW that is heading this way, it's Benz as well. Quality is really suffering and the recent recall of 1.3m units is only going to prove a point. They're both trying to cut corners where as their competitors such as VW are able to use their much bigger ecconomy of scale to get better quality parts at similar prices.

A standard Toyota these days probably has better quality internal trim due to it's sheer purchasing power. Yes, you could argue that the interiors are boring but the quality is there.

Just curious, how much is the 130i going for in various parts of the world?

Here in Australia for the Melbourne grand prix they had the celebrity race (bunch o' celebs stuck behind the wheels for ~5 laps) in the 130i's which would have been BMW's attempt at pushing it somewhat in the Australian market. Though they weren't present when the Motorshow came to town recently. Eediots.

As for if Jeremy will like it? It's gonna be farking hillarious watching him review it based on what that newspaper column is like
