Las Vegas (AFP) - The sleek three-wheeled car looks futuristic, but, as its creator acknowledges, it uses no new technology.

What makes the Elio Motors vehicle unique is its ultra-high fuel economy and an ultra-low price tag: $6,800.

The vehicle, which was on display at the Showstoppers startup showcase on the sidelines of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, promises to deliver as much as 84 miles (134 kilometers) per gallon (3.8 liters) of gasoline for highway driving.

It accelerates as quickly as many cars on the road -- to 100 miles per hour in 9.6 seconds, according to the company. Urban fuel economy is estimated at 49 miles per gallon.

Company founder Paul Elio said he came up with the idea because "I got mad about seeing all this wealth leave the country" for imported petroleum.

An engineer by training, Elio began the firm in 2008 and recently took over an abandoned General Motors plant in Louisiana -- one which had been producing the gas-guzzling Hummer.

In order to deliver the best fuel economy, the car has a cockpit wide enough only for the driver, with a passenger seat in the rear. It has two wheels in front and tapers in the rear to a single wheel.

"Front-to-back seating, that's the key to mileage," Elio told AFP.

This makes it principally a one-person car, but Elio said the vehicle is a good solution for the millions who drive along to work or leisure events.

Elio readily admits there is no special technology in the car -- it has a three-cylinder internal combustion gasoline engine, power windows, air conditioning and anti-lock brakes. While it does not have some of the on-board electronic gadgety found in other vehicles, drivers can connect their smartphones for navigation, apps and more.

"This was a design completely based on existing engineering," says company spokesman Jim Andrews.

The car has a top crash-impact rating from the National Highway Transportation Safety Board, and is expected to meet all US safety standards.

Elio is targeting the US market but hopes to eventually ship internationally.

He has more than 6,000 orders from customers who have paid a deposit, and hopes to start delivering in the first quarter of 2015.

He also plans to speak with major automakers, including Chrysler, about possible partnerships.

It's not clear how much of an impact the Elio vehicle will have, but it comes after a sizzling debut for another startup carmaker, Tesla, which sells a $70,000 electric car.

Other three-wheelers may be in the words as well: a three-wheel concept car from Toyota was on display at the huge electronics exhibition.

Elio said he is encouraged by the response to the car.

"We didn't design it to be cool," he said. "It was cool by accident."

I would have one. It would be a perfect commuter car for bad weather or when I need to carry more than the motorcycle can manage but not enough to need the XTerra. And I have to admit, it is a pretty cool car.

I'd buy one. I could use a cheap commuting appliance, and that is far more affordable than a normal subcompact.

And it is way cooler than any other commuter car. At least you won't lose it in a parking lot and it's available in a shade other than Metallic Shit or Communist Gray (light), Communist Gray (shiny), and Communist Gray (dark).

[Borat]...NOT![/Borat]

That's C63AMG / RS6 territory.

Even though it doesn't tilt like a Carver I still want one. If they can pass EU type approval and Euro NCAP they won't even have to tool up for RHD.

Unlikely, since it is an American company and the reveal was in the US.

It should be pretty light since all the bodywork is supposed to be composite materials and 55 hp is about that of a decent motorcycle. I don't see the 0-100 time on the company website, so that might be something Yahoo pulled out of their ass.

Probably a typo and they meant 100?km/h.

That's what I expect as well... They're quite weird anyhow, especially considering they metricate MPG by translating miles into kilometres and gallons into litres separately rather than providing one l/100km or km/l figure.

9.something to 100km/h is what the Octavia does, so it's quintessentially normal indeed.

Fair point. I stand corrected.

"When was the last time you drove over 100 miles an hour? Thought so..." No you didn't :tease:

50% larger... than what? Also, "projected" five-star rating? Da fuq?

If that comes to U-rope I'd buy one, even though I'd think they would just slap a Euro-sign behind the price...

Hell, the video says it's fitted with a manual as standard, not as an option, and that's one of my main grudges about all those eco-friendly cars: most of them don't have the option of choosing a manual, and as long as I'm able to I'll always drive manuals.

You can buy a Twizy for that price today
Let me see...

- No manual gearbox
- Maximum speed of 80 kph, I would be a rolling doorstop when I'm on my way to a customer on the Autobahn, even semis would overtake me
- Some customers are about 60 km away so a round trip would exceed the range of the Twizy, that means I'd have to have my second car standing at work for the occasion if that customer needs an urgent on-site service

Err, nope, not an alternative...

Enclosed motorcycle/trikes (which is essentially what this is) can easily do that and have for years.

Yeah, but this won't. I'm going to hazard a guess that no FWD vehicle does 0-100mph in single digits.

Yeah, but this won't.

The similar T-REX makes the same run in 7.2 seconds, IIRC.

A re-engined one of these, a 1985-1990 Owosso Litestar/Pulse, can do it in 8 seconds.

That said? I doubt the Elio Motors product has got a lot on top over 100mph. Isn't gearing fun?

There are some. How about a 9 second Civic?

No, that's the one with the lame BMW K1600 touring bike engine. It has been offered with hypersport bike engines out of the ZX-12Rs, Hayabusa engines, etc. It has also been offered with a Harley Davidson boat anchor'engine'.

Swapping the engine still leaves it RWD. Also, the "lame" BMW engine is still three times the power of the Elio. "similar"? I think not.

As for that Civic, sure... I'm 100% certain this tricycle will be almost as fast as that.
