TOP GEAR in Argentina

Destroying private property and going out of your way to try and injure people because of a plate is understandable? For some reason I doubt if this was reversed in Germany with jeremy doing some kind of WW2 we won plate, or nazi plate on a VW I feel very much him and the production team wouldn't get stoned for their efforts.

Sounds like it was aiming up to be an epic special. Hopefully they can remove the cars and re-do it in Chile.

I completely agree that their reaction was not warranted. Your comparison with WW2 and the Nazis is a poor one however. Maybe you should read a bit about each war to get an idea of just how different they were. The relevance of putting the plate on a VW totally escapes me. Your assumption that they would not encounter violence in Germany implies that they are a more peaceful people; or at least that's the way it reads. Perhaps it is not what you meant. I doubt that many Germans feel a since of pride about their role in that war. If any nation feels as though somebody is rubbing salt into their wounds for the loss of life during a military campaign that they felt was justified, they would most likely react in some way. Once again, their actions were not justified. But to compare the Falkland / Malvinas war with the Nazis and WW2 shows a real lack of regard for history.

Well, VW is virtually a product of Nazi Germany, as the beetle was a Nazi project (that was more like a scam) and later the car that put VW on the map.

If that plate is really a coincidence, and I dunno if we'll ever know, it must be the worst coincidence ever.

As if it was a coincidence. Anyone who believes that is as stupid as Wilman thinks they are.

My theory is that the guy who outed Clarkson's eeny meeny out-takes forewarned people in Argentina of their intentions.

The Beetle only went into production after the war as the result of the British. They can take as much of the credit for promulgating Hitler's dream as anyone.

doesn't sound fake this time

Stupid question. When did this happen first?

It hasn't happened before. In S09E3 (the $1000 American Car challenge, 2007) they faked a rock-throwing attack at an Alabama gas station. There was no footage whatsoever of even a single person attacking them in any way. It was some of Top Gear's most embarassing and cringeworthy scripting/editing work, and unfortunately for them this current event might call renewed attention to it. Despite this, a lot of folks (even here) still believe it happened.

This incident is probably legit; I really doubt they would stage a similar stunt in the third world. Can you imagine the shitstorm that would have resulted if they had slandered Vietnam like that, by falsely claiming they were attacked because of the All-American moped?

When the episode finally airs, I really hope they put as many anti-Argentine jokes in as they can, Furthermore, they should all wear T-shirts that say "We sank the Belgrano'.

Bottom line is, a good part of British humour is based on slagging off any nation they went to war against. Like this So I hope they really put the boot in.

This PC shit is pissing me off.

What the fuck is wrong with the world these days when everyone is offended by every fucking thing.
Man the fuck up and don't act like fucking caveman fucking throwing fucking stones on a fucking car for fucks sake.

So there's a fucking number on a fucking numberplate that has the same fucking number as the year a war was.
GET THE FUCK OVER IT YOU FUCKING CUNTS!

Grow the fuck up and accept that the world is a fucking rough and nasty place and stop acting like a fucking entitled bitch.

Here's the thing. When you make jokes like these, jokes that tickle some old very bitter rivalry, you're putting your chips down and betting that it'll go well. Sometimes it will, sometimes it won't. Argentina has a lot of people in it if you go check, perhaps most of them would have been okay with the plate, others wouldn't care. But the rule of big numbers say that in a big enough sample, with a small chance of an event happening, it'll happen a lot of times. So here are the people who didn't find it one bit amusing.

The Falklands war is a very deeply rooted national thing for Argentines, while it's just a bragging/joking matter for the English.
I'm not supporting the Argentines, I think it's nonsensical, specially cos the war was entirely a fabrication by a military dictatorship government who was on the decline and wanted to divert the public attention to somewhere else. That said, it was still young argentine conscripts who were sent to the islands with very little preparation and support, to die to the much better trained and equipped English. However shitty the government was at the time, and after the failure of their little scheme, they didn't last long in power, thankfully, those were still Argentines who went and died there, insulting their memory is just asking for trouble.

I digress. It was a stupid joke, it had more risk in it than reward, this time it backfired.

I'm just a bit worried about BBC having enough of JC and TG in it's current format. In the last couple of months JC has been in the tabloid headlines like 4 times. One of those suits heading the BBC might get annoyed and decide it ain't worth the hassle.

I know TG is the chicken that lays golden eggs for the BBC but still, you rock your boat enough and you just might drown.

You don't seem to understand the nature of the Falkland conflict. It's not that the issue was never really solved, it's still cooking below the surface. The lost war still rests like a thorn in the side of all Argentinians (not that I'm taking any side in this, both sides are right in their own way).

But if you desperately need an analogy of how the Argentinians feel of it, imagine Top Gear would erect a statue of Arthur "Bomber" Harris in the center of Dresden. That'll definitely produce a huge uproar.

Well, VW is virtually a product of Nazi Germany, as the beetle was a Nazi project (that was more like a scam) and later the car that put VW on the map.

Yes but what most people ignore or simply do not know, is that the Beetle was produced with imported American machines (because Germany had no experience with assembly belt production of cars) in a factory that was re-erected with express wish of the British ;)

All that bullshit talk about how the Beetle is a symbol of Hitler is quite irritating, when you consider that without the help of the allies it would have never been put into production after the war. But I guess one cannot expect from everyone to know the details about post-war history... or maybe it is more convenient for some to keep it simple

I don't think that would have cooked over so badly, if the Top Gear lads wouldn't have earned a reputation of making fun of other countries. It's like someone making tasteless jokes about somebody else. He's entitled to get a punch in the face sooner or later. And I'm quite sure that if another crew than Top Gear would have done the same, if wouldn't have caused such reactions in Argentina.

So while you can argue about the time and place it happened now, you cannot argue about them being provocative almost all the time and were entitled to sooner or later getting that kind of reaction out of other people.

The only question I have been asking myself all those years was, why they needed to implement those stupid stereotypical jokes into the show. I can only assume the massive success of Top Gear throughout the world has made them feel a bit "untouchable". But despite all the huge success and the enormous fan base, there is still quite a big part of the world's population hat doesn't know Top Gear and if they do, don't like it at all...

Oh well I know the story now that it was featured on James May's car of the people

You lost the war, get the fuck over it. A mob of idiots. Every single one of them.

That is one ironic comment if I ever seen one. Calling a whole country idiots while making an idiotic statement yourself.

is FKL even a shortening for Falklands? i'd have figured it'd be FLK, not FKL?

edit:
translated the linked site in the firts post, seems TG was just passing through Argentina on their way to Chile, they seem to be crossing south america, so it's not even got anything to do with Argentina specifically...

I think JC knew what he was doing with that numberplate. I am so sure it was planned to be used for comedic effect in the final edited version of the episode, but they insulted the wrong people. Never condone violence, but this was stupid by the whole Top Gear crew.

No, it was hilarious, and you are condoning violence.

This whole stunt makes me like Clarkson even more, I love how he rubs the left's face in it. Argentina is a VILE socialist hell hole fully deserving of contempt and ridicule. How fitting that they had to flee to a free-market capitalist and relatively successful country like Chile :).

No wonder the BBC are up in arms, many of them were siding for Argentina during the war.

Indeed. Idiots led by an idiotic paranoid national socialist woman. This is no different to the comedy that was had at Hitler's expense after and during WW2, ironic since thousands of nazis ended up fleeing to Argentina and forming their governments.

Violence on this scale has to be organised and organised by people who are blind to all common sense and reason if they think their cause justifies attacking people with pickaxes and trying to burn them alive. I very much hope that the two seriously injured crew members received prompt medical treatment and send them my best wishes for their recovery.

Oh wow... I think the IQ in this discussion dropped noticeably with the past posts...

I think he was referring to the actual mob present. In which case, I think he's right. Attacking somebody on the grounds of a perceived insult shouldn't be how civilized people operate.
