I'm sure everyone's heard about the huge tsunami in southeast Asia that has claimed over 125,000 lives. Has anyone here been affected by it? I know some members live in Malaysia, which was one of the countries hit. I hope everyone's okay.

Yeh, Andrew lives in Kuala Lumpur, but I think I saw him posting today so hopefully he's ok...

They said the deathnumber could double because of the spreading deceases....

This is unbelievable, every hour I check the news and the number increases with insane speed...I think this is gonna be the biggest nature disaster ever...

I believe the biggest number of casualties was 140.000 caused by a hurricane...

Let's hope not...

125000?

that much?
The last figure I read was 25000 (nonetheless a huge and unbelievable amount...)

This really was something so hard to believe... All those people...
I've seen the footage on TV. Couple of weeks ago I read a book where a huge wave like that and it hitting the coast was described... Got an instant chill...

Everybody is collecting money for them right now, tv, radio, every body.
The dutch people gave 9,3 million euros to "Asia".
Worldwide there is 380 million euros collected.

*weird fact: The earth is spinning a fraction of a second faster. About 3 microseconds. The axle on where the earth is spinning moved with 2,5 cms!*

Because of the quake?
Does that mean our day is shorter?

You mean the earth is spinning faster because of the earthquake? Or Seaquake? Don't know the name for it

Apparently there was an island that was moved 100 meters from the earthquake! Last I heard the death-toll was over 100,000 which is absolutely horrendous.

I know two people who are vacationing in Singapore right now actually, but thankfully both were well inland when it happened. One was actually on the beach just 2 days before it happened.

Yes, it was a seaquake (if that word exists).
Yes our day will be one second shorter..
I think it's called a "leap-second"...just like you were born in a "leap-year"(????)
If you are borning in a leapyear you only have your birthday once every 4 year..

The scientists also said the seaquake may have shifted some small islands in the region by more than 30 metres (Sumatra 36 meters!!). The forcing of one tectonic (sp) plate under the edge of another had the effect of making the earth more compact and spinning faster..slightly, it's not noticable or "bad"...

I get it... Still incredible! Some interesting fact behind the tragedy...

Two friends of mine (Americans) were vacitioning in Thailand. They were right in the middle of it, they said it was a pretty traumatic experience but they survived.
I decided not to go with them, otherwise I would have been there too!

I was on vacation in Thailand before, a really beautiful place and what has happened is just unbelievable for me...

I've also heard the death toll to be over 100,000 people, and it's expected to go up significantly (as someone already mentioned) becuase of diseases caused by poor sanitation.

There has been over $500 million collected already...and rising.

Jet Li (the martial arts guy) was in a hotel with his daughter/girlfriend (not sure which) when water came...he grabbed her and they somehow managed to escape - all he got was a twisted ankle.

Some tennis star was in a hotel...the airforce (I think Sri Lanka?) rescued them.

And some skiing guy was on the beach with a friend when they saw the water coming...they raced by foot for about 3 miles...escaped it.

Can you imagine seeing a tsunami way out there, and racing by FOOT to try and get to higher ground!? I can't imagine what an experience like that would be like.

Jet Li is Jet Li....he could stop that wave if he had enough power...and size..

Jwing...are we sending money to GIVE to them or SPENDING money to help them 0_o?

I was on holiday when it hit and I was in one of the islands off the coast of malaysia... I was actually quite close to the center of the quake... less than 400km away... its is a good thing that the island which was badly hit in indonesia shielded most of the waves.... I still had waves abt 5m high crashing on the beach... quite scary but it was a great experience

!!! WARNING !!!

The following link is VERY graphic. It's a bunch of dead bodies as a result of the Tsunami. You've been warned.

!!! WARNING !!!

Anyway, even with that picture, it's still hard to put it into your head that 118,000+ people have died.

it's still called an earthquake. doesn't matter if the epicentrum is below the sea, it's still the earth which is "quaking"

celebs: Petra Nemcova (supermodel) is wounded and La Ciccolina (no idea who she is) is missing
