The sun never sets on the British empire
I figured this is the political forum and we've got local elections in under two weeks time, so let's have a thread and poll to see how the Brits of the forum are going to vote :D Poll options are private and others can't see which way you vote.

My views on the parties;

Labour (left wing);
socialist nut-jobs who have run the UK into the ground for the past 12 years. Sold our gold reserves off at fuck all, took us into an illegal war, ruined our economy by making it more profitable to go on welfare than go out to work. The way I see it the only people who vote labour are public sector workers ( 6 million of these now ) or people who deliberately want to destroy the UK.

Liberal Democrats ( center-left); Voting liberal democrat is essentially like walking* into the electoral office and tearing your vote paper up infront of the eyes of everyone else. They're never going to take office and they're essentially just watered down labour.

* And yes, I really do mean walking in. Most their voters are either students or people who want to "save the planet," hence no car. Perhaps they cycle there? I'm not sure... :blink:

Conservatives (center-right); Conservatives have a proven track-record of running the economy well and cleaning up the mess that Labour and trade unions leave behind (see 1950's and 1980's). Ooh, I also like Daniel Hannon and he's my MEP for the south-east, so it's either these guys or UKIP for me.

BNP (very very very right wing); basically the ku klux klan, but condensed into a politcal party and allowed to be legal for some reason.

UKIP; Want to leave the European union :D

Green party; Vegetarians who write into Top Gear.

Maybe, but they also have a record of selling off publicly owned companies/services to rake in some cash for the government, The current tory leadership has hinted that the BBC might be in for some serious "changes" under a conservative government. Also voting conservative here in Scotland after after how they dealt with us during Thatcher's era is still a sore subject.

Labour used to stand for everything left-wing. Over the past 12 years they've drifted to the right - on some issues, to the right of the Tories.

I'd rather gouge out my eyes with a rusty spoon than vote Tory. Parliament is meant to represent the people. I'm not sure how people with 12 houses and think paying for mole-extermination and moat-cleaning are legitimate expenses is meant to represent the people.

My main concern over these elections is just ensuring that neither the BNP nor UKIP (a vaguely diluted BNP) get into power.

As for my vote, due to the way the European voting system works, a vote for a smaller party isn't a wasted vote - here's an explanation how the system works. Yes, it's made by the Green party but it's genuinely informative.

So my vote will probably be going SNP or LibDem.

Not quite an unbiased view of the UK political spectrum now is it Tory boy... That said i'd still probably vote Tory.

I'm not voting at all. Labour are a bunch of complete idiots, who have now combined the worst parts of the left AND the right, and added extremist environmentalism and big-brother surveillance to top it off. I'm sorry but I can't vote for the Tories either, most of them seem to be disconnected from reality. And like teeb said, many of them have 12 houses and put janitors under expenses- not exactly connected with the common man. Both the BNP and UKIP are far too scarily right-wing for me, particularly of course the obsessively nationalist BNP. The liberal-democrats mean nothing, and green means nothing. Neither one of them is going to win so there is no point in me voting for them (as though I would anyway). Criticise me for not participating if you will, but all in all I am (and have been) extremely disappointed in our system for a long time now. At this point, picking the best of the worst, I would just have to say that I don't give a damn.

I'm not saying the conservatives are a good party, I'm just saying they're the least worst - in my eyes. Think about it, the conservatives are better at picking wars to fight than labour;

There's a thought - is it better to not vote at all or to go and spoil your vote? I'm not sure.

As I posted above, due to the way the EU elections work (proportional representation), small parties have a reasonable chance of getting one MEP - there's 8 UKIP MEPs at the moment, and they're a loony fringe party.

I'm not hugely bothered either way if you vote or not, but the idea that "your vote doesn't count" is not the case here.

It's my first election, and for better or worse, I'm voting Conservative. Aside from agreeing with a good chunk of stuff they say, if we want rid of Labour then it means voting Conservative. It's that simple.
While it's still ridiculous, claiming for a duck house is nowhere near as bad as the borderline fraud that half-a-dozen Cabinet members are flirting with, and Cameron (and Clegg, for that matter) has dealt with the problem in a much better way than Brown.

I'd take issue with those calling BNP 'far right'. They tend attract more Labour protest votes and espouse ridiculous socialist economic policy in addition to their Nazi-esque views on race. I found it amusing that their leaflets feature a Spitfire from a Polish squadron and an Italian couple being used as the image of the 'average' BNP supporters...

Anyone want to guess my vote?

Personally I like, and dislike some policies of all the parties (BNP excepted).

You missed the Scot and Welsh Nationalists and Sinn Fein btw. "Other" does not do them justice.

I have to agree with you. Daniel Hannon is one of my favorite living politicians.

Were I in Scotland right now as I should have been, I'd probably be volunteering for the SNP.

Shame on you. Why?

You realise that while everyone assumes the Tories are better for defence, the Labour party consistently spend more on defence than the Conservatives when in power. One of the first things a Tory government does is cut defence to spend on health, education, tax cuts etc.

I just don't give a shit anymore.

Labour - No
Conservatives - Doubt it, not well thought of up here
Lib Dem - No
SNP - No as I'm not "Scottish"

In that case BNP or UKIP :? :blink:

BNP - in Scotland? Do they even stand there?

They do - I got an election flyer from them in the post last week.

I can't imagine them getting their deposits back* in any of the Scottish constituencies though.

(*5% of the vote or more)

Ditto UKIP - they're standing in Scotland, but I can't see them getting any decent percentage. They've a large billboard in the city centre of Glasgow, with Churchill on it.
