Yay for batch searches!
Armed police continue to guard the buildings as specialist officers search the 7,000 safety deposit boxes.

So far only a third of the boxes have been opened and the finds have also included a firearm, counterfeit currency, several works of Renaissance art and a substantial amount of high value jewellery.

The BBC report is light on details, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume these aren't targeted raids of specific safe deposit boxes rather they are searching entire swaths of these things. Guess they're not so safe after all...

If you find details in other articles, post em up for discussions sake.

Yay for freedoms!

Kinda like The Bank Job, huh.

Excellent movie, BTW, I suggest everybody go see it. Starts off like a cheesy 70s version of Ocean's 11 but then becomes progressively darker and violent, which is always fun. Some great old British cop cars as well.

Bank Job FTW

I love the way they make them so twisted and they end up proper like in the end

a deposit box is meant to protect your items from theft not allow you to hide illegal goods in it, i'm sure that when you sign up for a safe deposit box that it has a clause in it allowing it to be opened by law enforcement.

If they have a warrant I guess, but a warrant, here at least, is to look for something specific. I dunno about there, but here you can't just go "I want to see if they have anything illegal in their house, so I'm gonna look".

They also raided several bank accounts that day and discovered that many of them contained money.

Oh good they didn't raid mine then

Of course they have a warrant, and they know what there looking for, I'm not sure if the fact that there going thru each box individually is true as I heard that it was a lot of boxes owned by a gang. A bit unfair though if they do go through someone's box who hasn't done anything wrong, but how do they know it's not got a gun in it, this isn't the worst thing to happen in the UK as fair as the old thing privacy is concerned.

That is an aweful lot of raiding for not many arrests (2) - I think that they (The Metropolitan Police) have cocked it up to be honest. But time will tell.

I also agree going on a 'fishing trip' is not acceptable, with respect to personal liberty.
