US To Have Same Limits As Germany's Autobahn?

The worst thing is, that if the speed limits are imposed on the autobahns, they'll take away some of the incentive for buying the fast Mercs and the like.
Not to mention, incentive for visiting Germany :p

. . . were are the remaining locations in the world where there are no posted speed limits? Is northern Australia still unlimited?
Um...Mexico? (assuming you have some bribe money)

I KID, I KID! :D

Of course we all speed, some more than others. I personally don't like to go over more than 5. Most cops won't bother you at that speed. The road I travel the most you can go almost as fast as you like, there is rarely any cops. However, it's a fairly dangerous road in that they repaved it a few years back and left a 2 inch drop to the soft shoulder. I've seen many accidents where a car goes off the road, then over corrects trying to get back and spins out through a fence or ditch. One instance a Toyota Tercel spun out and ended up in oncoming traffic, then was rear ended by a Chevy pickup. The two in the Toyota where killed, the people in the truck only had minor injuries.

Based on my observations from the 3 years of living here, any road is a dangerous road in Missouri! A lot of people seem to drive loads better on the county highways more so than the interstate. It's like they get on highways and just stop caring how to drive.

they may as well raise speed limits in most places in the US anyway. I rarely drive below 80MPH on the highway unless it's during traffic, and even then most of the time it's above the 65MPH limit. Today I broke 100MPH about 5 times going to and fro looking at houses, so long as you aren't being a jackass there's really not much of a problem.

Looks like the EU is steadily extending it's reach into it's member countries, before you know it europe will end up like the US has.

Honestly why do we make such a big deal about car emissions, they account for a small amount of the greenhouse gases made by humans it seems we could go other places rather then taking out everything on cars.

Because the companies that own all the things that really cause the problems have to many politicians in their pockets.

back on topic:

I recall reading something a while back that basically said if people were allowed to drive at any speed they want, that they tended to actually drive better because they actually concentrated. Rarely did people really exceed 100mph.

I think the "study" used the 3 years Montana had no speed limits as an example since the accident rate dropped massively.

You can do that in Malaysia as well... will bribe money... that's the only reason why you only see nice cars doing speeds of about 160. And the great thing is, if you have a car with a "Datuk" badge (aka. Sir equivalent), cops don't even touch you unless you're being an idiot.

We once even bribed for a Police escort for a 300km journey with all of 8 cars doing about 160-170 and the Volvo XC90 police car just pushing everyone out the fast lane, I was having the best time of my life :D

Who here sits on the highway speed limit, though?

I know in my normal run (100km/h most of the way), I'm normally sitting on 110 or so, but I'll do the speed limit in town.

just drove to Torquay yesterday and I just followed this group of cars, all 4 of us were sitting just abit below 110 (max. speed is 107 IIRC)... on highways, I do about 10 above and in town, I don't speed.

out here the only people who sit on the limit or the standard 5 over are old people. unless there's some problem with traffic like an accident or rush hour or something like that the minimum you'll be going along with everyone else is 5mph over.

About the study- apparently, even on the unlimited sections of the Autobahn, most drive about 130-140 km/h. I think that 130 km/h or 80 mph is a very good limit... not so much for the car, but the drivers. It would also fit the "80th percentile" rule nicely.

The problem isn't going 130 in a 100 zone, it's doing 130 when everyone else is going, say, 80. Those lane-jockey idiots are the turnstile jumpers of the car world and should be run off our roads. =)

Now that you say that I wonder if setting an actual speed limit makes people stupid because they seem to get the feeling that "well this must be a perfectly safe speed to drive at" even if their car is wandering all over the road, engine screaming, and car vibrating like crazy.

If they are required to use their own discretion than if they want to drive like a complete moron then they'll have to slow down to a speed they are entirely way to safe with, which traffic most likely won't let them.

Good luck finding that combo in the US.
it's the middle part you've got to worry about. Out here we have a pretty good highway system and it's still under renovation/development. It's based off the system used in Tokyo, only not toll roads(most places). Most of the sections are very nice to drive, smooth, banked, walled, very fun for some high speed shit. But there's always the odd grandma in the left lane doing EXACTLY the speed limit or something like that.

it's funny, I find people drive better early in the morning or late at night. during the day, especially on sundays, is when you encounter most of the idiots. Otherwise people seem to move at a pretty good clip and will move over when you come up behind them.

I wish we could get some of those 80mph limits here in Florida.

I lived in Denver as a kid and was there about 3 years ago, I am surprised at how nice the roads are there considering the weather there. Denver seems to have someone screwing them over though cause my Aunt was complaining that they are lowering the speed limits on certain key highways to push people on the toll roads.

The only problems with Colorado are my mom lives there (she should not be allowed behind the wheel of a 1+ton machine capable of speeds above 3MPH), and for a place that gets a good amount of snow, they don't seem to have a damn clue how to drive in it. Same goes for here in Missouri.
It's like the states that get it have people that just assume they know how to drive in it, why these states don't require drivers ed and those courses don't force snow/ice driving training is beyond me. At least Denver drivers actually obey some of the rules of the road and don't clog the left lanes like they do here.

This country seriously needs to improve it's license testing. /rant
