Usenet: good, affordable newsserver with unlimited download?

Hi!

Today I tried out Usenet using my ISP's server. Although I'm using the biggest ISP in Germany there are only shitty groups. Almost no binaries and the binaries it has are crappy. :x
Also found a public server which had the good groups but unfortunately it was awfully slow. :(

I don't really like the idea of paying for this by using another server, but maxing out my connection while downloading stuff sure is tempting... (compared to waiting many hours or even days using p2p)

BTW, in the thread title I said affordable server, but by affordable I obviously mean as cheap as possible!
So, which one is the cheapest server out there offering unlimited download and all the major (good) newsgroups?

I know a couple of people on this forum are using usenet, so someone will hopefully be able to help me!

Thanks in advance! :)
Oliver

Moved by request, as OT gets more hits :)

Check out Rhino's news servers, 16.34 euros/month for 100GB and 35+ days for multi/single part binaries, text is 600+days, but that doesn't matter ;)

I really need to look in my couch for some money so that I can get newsgroup access. <_<

Nice find, sounds really good. :)
Although it's not unlimited I'm probably gonna have a hard time leeching more than 100GB a month. Hell, probably they're offer with the 50GB limit for 12.22? is more than enough!
I wonder why those huge differences in pricing exist... For instance, some other news servers I found are charging up to 70$ for 80GB/month!

Found another server, Giganews:

Sounds good in my opinion, what do you guys think?

At the moment I'm thinking either Rhino News or Giganews.

EDIT:
BTW, on both websites they say I'm not supposed to transfer copyrighted works through their system. On the other hand they also say they cannot and do not review the information flowing through their system. So what they said earlier doesn't really matter, or does it? :shifty:

You don't have enough money? When reading your posts in the tech-section it looks like you're upgrading your PC every other day! :p

PS: More recommendations are appreciated!

www.yottanews.com is free with 1 Gb a month.

There are also very affordable paying packages.

Nice! :)

So yottanews seems to be the best of the bunch then, right? Unlimited download for ~12.26? a month seems hard to beat. (Giganews wants 20.43?, but maybe they got more groups?)

I can only see one problem:

Please note that accounts from services like Yahoo or Hotmail will not be accepted.

I don't have my own email account under my ISP's domain. My main account is at GMX Freemail (German). Not sure if they really block all freemail providers, but I don't wanna enter my CC number to find out. Suggestions? <_<
Furthermore there's nothing about the cancellation policies on their hp...

Thanks for your input guys, keep it coming! :)
(I would like to sign up later today)

Gmail is also free, isn't it? So I guess that would be the same as Yahoo or Hotmail.
(but maybe I'll come back to your offer later, thanks)

I don't really wanna get another email though, I'd prefer to stick with my main account. (GMX is pretty good, attachments of up to 20mb, 1GB inbox, etc.)
I hope they just don't block GMX, Yotta News being an American company can't know every Freemail provider on the planet - hopefully.

Maybe I'll just try it with a wrong GMX address and wrong CC# and see if I get an error message... :?:

EDIT:
Just made a free account on YottaNews. No complain about the email address, everything works. But what I quoted above is only mentioned on the sign-up form...

EDIT2:
Everything besides downloading works, dunno what the problem is.
Yesterday I successfully downloaded one mp3 off a public server, now NewsLeecher just says queued. When I get it to initialize (which I still don't know how) it counts down the parts to 0 (e.g. 17 of 17 parts, 16 of 17 parts, etc.) and then the file just disappears. It's not in the download queue anymore and not downloaded.

Argh! :x

how old is the article? if its older then the retention the newsserver offers you're too late in downloading the file.
You should be able to get that 1GB from Yottanews without much of a hussle.

@bigfoot1942:
Thanks for you input! :)

Do you actually have experiences with Eweka or are you just using your ISP's server? Because 7.50? sounds great indeed, just need to know if their server is any good...

Unfortunately I don't understand everything on their hp - but still quite a lot considering I never learned Dutch. ;)
So I don't even need a credit card, just my bank account number? Just have to enter my german bank code, then a "/" and my account number? (and of course the remaining fields like country, name, etc.)

What about cancellation, who long does it take till I can use my account after I signed up. (with other servers using CC it's ~30mins)

As for the Yottanews thing. I have no idea what the problem, but then again I'm a Usenet noob. I tried to download several (very) recent files which were "green"/complete but it didn't work... Retention shouldn't be the problem, couldn't download anything, no matter if tried pics, vids or just text articles. They go into the queue, initialize and then just disappear.

If I'm not using Yottanews in the end it doesn't matter, because in genereal it seems to work. (e.g. I downloaded a mp3 off a public server yesterday)

cya & thx

Video card and 400 GB HD were free to me. ;)

about Eweka:
I got a login from a friend last week, but he had only a week left on that account.
It worked perfectly for me, and my ISP's newsserver was quite crappy so i downloaded about 12,5GB off eweka. I only had to download a couple PAR2 files to repair my downloads, so the > 99% completion sounds true enough to me.

For the next 10 days i'll be enjoying my Tweaknews trial (shared with someone else so i really get 2x10days). After that ill get an eweka account (shared so 2 threads) but that means i have to pay only E 3,75

Anyhow, i dont really have experience on eweka account settings and stuff like that...
but their service seems worth the 7,50 (and ill be willing to pay the 3,75 glad enough)

from their site: (just put http://www2.eweka.nl/leesmeerusenet.php in http://www.systransoft.com/index.html and translate it from dutch to english:)
- Access to all available newsgroups
- High-speed downloadsnelheid to 10 Mbit/s
- High quality worldwide exchange of newsfeeds
- High-speed own 20 Gigabit/s network
- More storage redundant as 100 TB online
- Optimum compleetheid of more than 99%
- Ongecensureerde access
- Anonymous upload
- No date limit (no datalimit)
- Up to 28 days retention for binaries groups
- Maximum 4 connections permitted by user
- Access to online control panel
- No notice (no cancellation time)

and from http://www2.eweka.nl/aanmeldenusenet.php:
To our usenetdiensten no notice applies because these have been based on Pre-Pay.
After reception of your payment you obtain on our system for 30 days.
This service is use as from virtually each Dutch and Belgian internet provider, with exception of Telenet, payments from the foreign country is, with the following IBAN code possible
IBAN NL66 POSTB 0009,594469 AND BIC: PSTBNL21
So you need the IBAN code.
I dont know if you can connect from Germany, theoretically there should be no problem at all, but you might want to email the eweka helpdesk just to make sure...

Thank you very much for your effort bigfoot! :)

I'm gonna send them an email to make sure I can use their service. Hopefully it'll be alright!

From what I understand though, I think I can't use the online form. Because instead of entering my account number on this online form, I have to go to the bank and make standing order. Hence, that's why they provide their IBAN, etc.

well, what did they say?

Actually I didn't have time to write them yet. Was busy organizing my siter's bday party, going out, etc. ;)

I'm probably gonna send the email tomorrow and post here when I get their reply. :)

if u're in the states, verizon has GREAT groups

Anyone has an update on this? Eweka doesn't work anymore, I guess...

I really don't wanna pay more than 10 Bucks for it, even though I know won't have unlimited dl for that.
I came across a couple of services that offer 2 GB a day for around 10 Euros... That's cheaper than most others...
