Video plays slow in WMP10

Windows media player has started to play WMV files really slowly. They'll play around half speed and the sound will be really low-pitched. The files play fine in WMP Classic, but I get the same problem with streaming videos and can't use WMPC to play those.

I tried setting hardware acceleration to zero, but that didn't work. Anyone have an idea to fix WMP or a way to play embedded streaming videos in WMPC?

Try reinstalling the wmv codecs, perhaps? You didn't play with the advanced settings, did you? You can actually change the pitch and speed. Does it concern only WMV or other feils too?

I tested some more files, and it happens to some MPEGs, some WMVs, some DivX, but not all files of any particular format. I haven't changed any of the advanced settings, and it's driving me crazy! :?

So what's the CPU load (task manager) when you're running WIMP? Or some other resource problem? Did you try reinstalling wimp and/or the codecs? Install over, or repair, or something.

CPU load is 0~5%. I'll try reinstalling. I should have kept WMP9.

EDIT: No go. :( I may try reinstalling the codecs later, but I haven't installed any new ones recently, so I don't see what could be wrong with them. They work fine with WMPC after all.

That's strange... just for the heck of it, check under View >> Enhancements >> Play Speed Settings. Try increasing it or something, just to see it change.

Better yet, try logging in with a different (new) user on your PC, who haven't used the WIMP before... so you can see if it is related to settings or the app itself.

Yes you should've kept 9 ;), anywho, there is another file that installs with WMP10, I cannot remember the name atm, but if you go to Add/Remove Prog. and check "Show Updates" it should have the file there, post a screenshot where WMP is installed please :)

Same problem under the other users. I tried the play speed settings before, and it gets the video to run at the right speed, but the pitch of the sound is still low. You can't adjust the speed of most videos anyway. Here's the screenshot:

It has to be WMP10's fault. I checked the videos with wmplayer2 (WMP6.4 basically) and they played just fine. Looks like I'm going back to V9.

Yes, but the runtime doesn't uninstall when you uninstall 10, that's why I suggested you uninstall the Runtime first, then the 10. And I posted the WMP9 linky above for ya ;)

Hope you get it werking again, had the same problem, drove me nuts figuring out what the hell was going on.

Well, I'm back to WMP9 and all's well. You have to uninstall WMP10 first though, as the runtime won't roll back untill WMP10 has done so first. I'm glad that's over with.

Is this just some inherent problem with WMP10 as far as you know? I ask because WMP10 handled fullscreen much better than WMP9 did.

a friend of me has a a similar weird problem

when he's playing music, and does sth processor-intensive, the music slows down
you'ld expect it would keep interrupting, but not to slow down
so weird
