Some TG Episodes are simply beautiful. It leaves me wondering who edits the videos? Who puts them to music? who decides the camera angles?

I hope im not alone when it comes to these awe-inspiring visuals. But just to kick-start your memory and this discussion. I'll start with my favorites:

2004.05.09 - Lotus vs. Apache. 49:51 - 55:45
2004.05.23 - Ferrari vs. GT3. 46:20 - 54:55
2004.05.30 - Porsche Carrera GT. 50:33 - 54:45
2004.07.18 - Ford GT40. 40:23 - 47:50
2004.10.31 - Enzo vs. Supercars. 46:11 - 55:15
2004.11.07 - Land Rover Discovery. 46:20 - 57:09
2004.11.14 - Zonda Roadster. 00:35 - 06:52
2004.11.14 - Aston vs. Ferrari. 44:58 - 54:51 (My Personal Fav.)
2004.11.21 - 50th Anniversary. 34:12 - 39:15
2004.12.12 - Lambo vs. Evo. 47:16 - 53:01

i agree.

those are indeed very well done vids.

the first time i watched the show, it was the first thing i noticed--visually beautiful. great camera angles, even the time of day they film stuff--was very hot. (for example...the Evo FQ400 walkaround in sunset) and then there's the music. oooooh my...

definately....but i always thought it was dawn. However, no question about the music, some of their choices seem custom made for these vids.

Is it the compression of the file we d/l or is it just me... but is almost every review scene shot with all the edges darkened??

yup.... TG does the Camera angles very well, plus they know what music goes with what sort of car or topic they are discussing... this is why I enjoy it and what makes it 100x better than 5th Gear

I gotta agree, I also agree that the best one was the aston martin Vanquish S vs. ferrari 575 GTC was the best (I assume thats the one your talking about)

They definitely have some talented people working at Top Gear in video/audio production and post-productioon.

Indeed they do, they can create any mood they want so easily. It's nice to see these clever people getting the recognition they deserve too.

The Apache Gunship scene with "ACE OF SPAAAAAAAADES!" blasting in the backround got me just as pumped as any action scene in any bigbudget movie I've ever seen. 8)

The MR FQ-400 set to "Riiiiiiize UP!" with that great drum beat was just out of this world!

When Hamster takes the Zonda through a tunnel, you'll notice the pulse of the music is syncronized to the passing of the dotted road lines under the car, "Wah wah wah wah wah-wah-wa" 8)

Oh, I almost forgot!

In the episode my sig features quotes from, setting the Bob vs. Rally race to the song from the Matrix was brilliant.

alot better camera work than 5th gear

The darkened edges are a post-production effect. You can do that sort of thing with filters but it's easier nowdays to do it in post.

They do tend to use things like polarising filters a fair bit (the really blue skies) but they have their limitations (you can't pan far with them - they lose their effect as the angle with the sun changes). Most of the really beautiful stuff is done in post. All built on great shot selection though.

I take the eps into work and let the cameramen have a look. Most of them, and not just the car fans, love the show just for the camerawork and the editing. They just wish they had the time and money to make things like Top Gear.

There are moments in the race to Monte Carlo which are beautifully filmed. Especially Jeremy whizzing along with scenes of the French countryside and Debussy's Clair De Lune in the background. It's so tranquil.

has anyone noticed that at 45:24 in the 2004.11.14 aston vs. ferrari ep; you can see another red car from JC's window?

the darkened edges, as Pulsinator said, are post production. but i was wondering, how do these guys film in the rain and otherwise unfavorable conditions without getting any droplettes on the lenz?

also...would everyone here agree with my opinion that the camera angles and music and overall production of the TG eps SIGNIFICANTLY improved from the 4th season onwards? cause the 5th season (so far) has been really good.

doea anyone know what software they use for editing? the only good software i know of is Adobe Preimere.

i am most definately talking about that one. and a close second would be the 2004.11.14 - Zonda Roadster video.

The main reason for us being stunned about the great visuals featured in TopGear is
because of the post-production/color-correcting they do. That's the significant difference
between TopGear and Fifth Gear, because Fifth Gear has no "look" at all, it's just plain
raw-footage directly imported from the camera's. Whilst TopGear does a whole lot with
the footage in post-production to make sure they get a desired feel to the images...

Are they shooting on film? Because sometimes TG episodes have colours (and plasticity) you just can't otherwise find in TV programs

I'd guess it's shot on Digi Beta. It's almost certainly not film. The editing is probably done on something like an Avid Symphony or Adreneline system. That's a guess. I don't know for sure what the Beeb uses.

Does anyone know if Top Gear shot on HD?

Filming in the rain is a pain, but not impossible. As long as you have a decent cover on the camera, and keep the focal length long, you wont even see some rain on the lens. There is a limit - it doesn't work if it is pouring - but you can get away with it.

EDIT> I take it back. They have film editors in the credits, so at least some of it must be shot on film.
