The Golf RS1 project car started in 1998 with an empty Golf IV body in the workshop. The brand new body was completely stripped with a new floor, new front and rear subframes and a roll cage. Everything was built from chrome-molybden pipes. The wide kit-car flares from VW Motorsport in Hannover provided enough space for big rims and tyres.

The rear subframe and suspension is a mix of Audi RS2 and Sport Quattro with titanium swaybars and magnesium suspension struts. The front subframe is custom built, also with titanium swaybars and magnesium suspension struts. The exhaust is built from 4.5" stainless steel pipes all the way from the turbo and back with a single muffler under the car. The transmission stems from an Audi IMSA car with a custom built final drive.

To further reduce weight, many of the stock parts were replaced by correspondning parts made from carbon fibre. For example, the instrument panel, door trims, hood and bumpers were all replaced by carbon fibre parts. The stock seats were removed in favor of Recaro carbon fibre sport seats with 6-point harness belts. All windows are made from lexan plastic.

The stock 1.8 litre engine was replaced by an inline five cylinder 2.1 litre Audi turbo engine with two large intercoolers. The engine develops about 600-900 hp depending on the choice of turbo and setup. To make room for the larger engine, the inner fenders had to be replaced by chrome-molybden pipes.

The larger engine did not leave any space for water or oil coolers in the front of the car so these had to be moved to the back with an air intake in the roof. The car is equipped with Alcon brakes with 375 mm front rotors and 355 mm rear rotors. Thanks to the wider kit-car flares, it is possible to use 10x19" rims with Bridgestone 265/30-19 or 12x20" rims with Bridgestone 285/30-20. The overall weight of the car is about 1440 kg.

I think this is a repost. I know it's old news. Some nice vids of it are running around the net.

Kick ass car though.

That's my kind of Golf!

Yeah, dunno about the repost, but since this was part of one of the first 5 car vids I ever dled, its gotta be ancient...

So basically what part of it is a golf? I don't think even the bodywork is stock

1200bhp/2.1liters=almost 600 bhp/liter?
Wow...I feel like screaming "bullshit", but who am I to doubt it...

have you seen the vid of it doing the 4wd donuts? thats more than 600 hp. some euro tuner mag had it on its cover saying it was at least 1200 hp when it broke their dyno

That car is 6 years old. In it's original tune it made 830 hp. I don't think he ever took out more from it. Also, it's a 2,3-litre isn't it. I know it's based on the same engine as the Audi S1, but it's slightly stroked.

The inner core of the chassis is all that is left of the original Golf, the rest is transplants. Everything from the firewall and forward is his own custom made construction. The whole rear axle and mountings comes from an Audi S2. The rear diff features 90% locking. The chassis is like 200% stiffer. The whole body is made from carbon fiber. As you can se it has two serieal coupled intercoolers, because there wasn't room for one that was big enough. It's got two fuel tanks, one for hight octane racefuel annother for normal petrol. The engine is programmed with a chip with a setting for each type of fuel. In it's race setting it produces 830 hp and drinks 18 litres per 10 km (1 norwegian mile) That's about 1,2 mpg...

^ do you know just how much money was put into it? i realize its not for sale or anything, im just curious

A huge lot, we're talking hundreds of thousands... (Norwegian currency...) But i don't think Dahlback himself paid much, because he runs Dahlback Racing whitch is a very successfull tuning buisness. They ship and send everything from valve springs to complete race engines and cars everywhere. Dahlback also has sponsors, so he gets some parts from them, pluss he does all the work in-house. And in the end the most expensive part in modifying cars, is the labour, so if you can du the work yourself, you can save a huge chunk of money.

And btw; the racefuel costs about $12 per gallon here, so with a 1,2 mpg consuption it's definately not sipping fuel cheaply...

I remember reading about it years ago in Performance VW here in the UK. Because he's the biggest Audi tuning specialist in Sweden he knows a lot of the guys in the actual Audi performance department so I understand that there are a fair few parts in there off old rally cars. Almost every one of their show cars have used the same 5 pot Audi engine. More impressive is Polo they built:
