Wow, it's so incredibly ugly. Just. Blind me.

I was thinking about this car today and thinking how cool it would be if VW and porsche shared a bit of tech to make this car a sort of budget 911.

Drop the flat 6 and swap a flat 4. Put a decent suspention in it, design it as a RR platform that somewhat resembles the old beetle and sell it as a cheap performance car.

There are not enough cheap RWD cars on the market these days. I'm talking start at $15K with nothing but a nice chassis and RWD and a manual.

then i'd prefer a remake of the MKI escort to be honest...

EDIT: or the BMW 2002!!! :woot:

It would be nice if they did that but they won't and that's why I get annoyed. They purposely make the suck and I would be shocked if these ones were any different.

Well, yah, that's sorta what i meant. :)

My friends and I have been saying they should remake this car for years!

They did, it's called the 1 Series.

Which Clarkson called the most fun compact car since the Vauxhall Chevette HS, which, in turn, was nothing more than a rebadged Kadett not unlike mine.

When the 1 series came out I was very excited bacuase I thought that it was going to be similar to the 2002, but it isn't

It's too expensive, to heavy, the motor is too big.

I'm talking about companies making BARE BONES cars that way nothing have little 2.0 or smaller 4cyl motors.
Cars that are great on gas and commute nicely, but are also hella fun on the weekends.

At the time the 2002 came out most cars were "BARE BONES". The 1 Series is available in a 1.8L as well.

I'm aware of that, and I wish cars were still made that way.

Also, the 1 series is to heavy to be any fun with the 1.8l motor.

I think this has now become the official car of FinalGear.

^Bah, that's still too heavy.

On the other hand, I know of a cheap car with its engine in the rear and is light enough to make Kate Moss's breakfast look positively Full English:

In winter 1977/78, my father hit black ice in his BMW 2002ti. He spent six months in hospital as a result of the crash and until today suffers from constant headaches. Having the same crash in a 1-series, he most likely would have walked away unharmed.
While i understand the charm of simplicity and am driving a '70s car with a "death trap on wheels" safety rating myself, i see why today's cars with their ultra-strong passenger cell, reinforced doors and a dozen or so airbags weigh more than a 2002 and why it makes a lot of sense for them to do so. Not to mention that electronic driving aids are much more practical than the '70s optional winter package consisting of a sack of cement in the boot.

Not to mention your dad may not even have had an accident at all with electronic aids, depending on the exact situation. Who knows, if that 2002ti had those aids you might now drive that instead of your Kadett
