Volkswagen has released pictures of the new sixth-generation Passat, to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show next March. Its styling is said to be influenced by both the Concept C and Concept R show cars, though as with all previous Passats, it's an evolutionary change rather than a revolutionary development. The grille is "set to become a feature of future Volkswagens", and there are Phaeton-alike circular rear LED lamps. Under the surface, there is new four-link rear suspension and standard equipment will include an electronic parking brake and a two-zone climate control system.
Larger than before, length is up 62mm to 4.77m, width up 74mm to 1.82mm and height up 10mm to 1.47m, and the wheelbase has also increased by 6mm. Luggage capacity has increased 90 litres to 565 litres. The Mk 6 Passat also has a new bodyshell, said to be 57 percent stiffer than that of the outgoing model.
Four engines will be available initially, the 1.6 FSI 115bhp and 2.0 FSI 150bhp direct-injection petrol units, and the 1.9 TDI 105bhp and 2.0 TDI 140bhp diesels. The DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) clutchless transmission will be offered with the diesel engines, and six-speed tiptronic auto with the petrol units; 4MOTION four-wheel drive versions will follow later. More details and pricing will be announced nearer to the launch.
