Walter R?hrl at the next N?rburgring 24h

That would be epic. If they don't finish last, that is. Entering the 24hrs of Nords in a ROAD car and not finishing last would be mighty impressive...
 
I think it's a nice touch, but somehow I don't like that the 24h are going more and more LeMans, I liked them especially for the small teams with joe average drivers........now with all the factory cars and the pro drivers it sure is faster, but the spirit is somehow borked. I wonder if Glickenhaus will manage to get his P4/5 racer going..

if the road car in question is a gt3, you?d have to try pretty damn hard to finish last...

No man, to me the exciting thing about the 24hrs at the ring is diversity. It?s really cool when you can watch the joe-average teams race along with the factories. It?s especially cool when the factories get it wrong. :mrgreen:

There have always been factories at this race. Right around the time when BMW stopped running the M3 GTR there was a short period with little or no factory teams. Now they?re coming back, and as long as they don?t start cutting down on the small teams, that?s good!

edit: I?m sitting here wondering what class they intend to race in. The categories for the stock road cars only go up to 3500cc....

nice move from Walter & Porsche. Not too far shot, espec. if there's rain involved. Can't believe their Gt3 would be bone stock, othervise it wouldn't be fair game.

Depends. Are they running road tyres or racing tyres? Cause with road tyres, I can't see it keeping up with anything...
 
Well they obviously won?t be running road tires. But even if they did, and even if you take WR out of the equation, they?d be far from the slowest car...

Putting a stock road car in the 24h race is quite common, the only thing that?s special about this one is the fact that it?s being entered by Porsche Motorsport, and driven by Walter....

In the framework of the "Sport Auto" (The German sportscar-magazine) 24h-Project Walther R?hrl and Horst von Saurma (the chief editor of the "Sport Auto"-magazine) are going to race a close-to-production version of the 997 GT3 RS at the 24h race at the N?rburgring. The car, which is actually going to fullfil German traffic registration laws, will shoulder the trip from Stuttgart to the N?rburgring before the race (and hopefully the way back, after) on it's own tyres.
There are going to be just a few minor modifications to be made (probably slick-tyres for the race, etc.) and the whole project is going to be supported by Porsche Motorsport.

Both the GT3 and GT3 RS are already running semi-slicks (Michelin Pilot Sport Cup's) so the tyres are quite grippy.

Oh, I'd LOVE to see Nissan bring some people and a stock GT-R and do the same thing... It would probably break down after a couple of laps. :roflmao:

oh god no :cry:

when I read the link I posted above, I thought it would be epic... but pairing up one of the best drivers to ever walk the face of the earth with someone who is really just slightly above average takes all the epicness out of the equation...
 
Let me get this straight... They are taking a world-famous rally champion who has since become the ace test-driver for Porsche, putting him on the 'Ring (his home turf. quite literally. as in, the track where he sets Porsche production car lap times) in a Porsche race car (for the road, but still).... This is going to be interesting hehehe
 
There is truth in your words, Ford Prefect but come on: It's Walther R?hrl! They could have ask Paris Hilton (may God beware us) to race aside with him and it still would be more epic than anything else.
And in the end Horst von Saurma is at least a very experienced Nordschleife-driver; it could have been worse.
We'll also have to see who are going to be the other drivers, they can't race twosome.

Don?t get me wrong, Horst von Saurma is a good driver, but far from exceptional. His only real bonus is that he has loads of experience driving expensive cars round the ring.

My point is that Sport Auto?s 24h projects are usually accompanied by incredibly boring and we?re-so-cool articles in the magazine, only to end in tears before the first half of the race. Actually at the last race it didn?t end in tears, it didn?t even start. Even Team Schrick got farther than their weird little R8 project.

Now that VW and Porsche have sort of hooked up, just think what other drivers he could have been sharing the car with... Now it turns out it?s Horst...

There is one person who should boot Von Saurma out of the seat. Gentleman Jim Richards, Australia's (well, NZ's but sshhhh) Walter Rohrl. Same age as Walter, also a Porsche ambassador and not a bad wheelman.
 
Just replace him with the Stig and some of his cousins, or with any actual racecar driver for that matter. I think the majority of the ring specialists wouldn?t mind sharing a car with him. But oh well, I guess it?s Horst and the rest of his clown squad then...
