A customer had his SportTrack towed into our shop this morning. He was towing his SportTrack behind his Motorhome "Coach" for about 50 miles before he noticed a problem. There appeared to be a lot of sparks coming from his SportTrack. There was only one small problem, when he got his SportTrack all setup behind the motorhome he forgot to take the trans out of park. Yep he had been towing it for the last 50 miles in park. The tires were gone and the rims were half gone, must of also wore down part of the axle housing to because it was leaking. Don't know how the trans is yet.

:bangin:

/me saw it on the same forum as roman

and as I said..

WTF 50 miles to realise that you're towing a car stuck in PARK!? :bangin:

:lmao:

Well seeing how you can weld magnesium rims (2 of them are cracked on my dad's Triumph and we'll have to get them welded), I don't think friction alone would produce enough heat to do anything.

anyone got more pictures?

It says in the text that all 4 tires were fucked, it'd be cool to see a picture capturing the whole vehicle ... so sad ...

The rims themselves wouldn't catch fire or anything, since big chunks of magnesium don't burn very well. However, the shower of sparks would have been a true sight to behold. When you drill or grind magnesium, the small chips and slivers of magnesium are the bits that catch fire very easily. Have you ever seen a wheelstanding car go down a track with giant gouts of sparks flying out? That's from magnesium (or titanium) blocks put on the the parts of the vehicle that touch the ground!

Because it seems people missed my post or something, the picture I posted is of the jetBlue A320 that landed with a sideways landing gear. The wheels on aircraft (or at least the A320) are magnesium. So, now take that picture of the A320, and imagine a SporTrac with that kind of sparking going on behind it. I can garuntee the driver of the motor home would have noticed (and so, too, everyone else on the road that day).
