My Volvo looks the same whether its clean or not. lol

Notice the miscolored passenger door panel, hehe the car is so ghetto.

YEah, but that reflector insert :yucky:

And those rear lights make it look cross-eyed.

I just prefer the European ones... Not that this car is anything I would say no to... ;)

My dad had a 1980 VW Golf in Germany. I loved that car. So therefore I love the 80s VWs.

I think thats a rabbit. MK1 golf is way different.

reflector insert? You mean that red rear side reflector? That is indeed a late model north american rabbit specialty. The rear lights are a custom piece.

no, they're the exact same cars. Rabbit is the North American name for the mk1 Golf. The North American market got the "Golf" name with the mk2. The differences are mostly lighting, trim and engine choices (Europeans have always had more options on VW's than we have), bumpers, and fenders, and these were all changed only in the later (80's model) rabbits.

This car (my brother's) is mostly converted to the older north american rabbits here... which are much more closer to the european mk1 golf's. He's changed to older fenders, shaved the side markers, switched to single rounds and the single round grille, and has installed the 'euro bumpers'.

Here's how he got it a couple years ago:

Do you have a picture of the rear of that second GTI??? I remember the rear end of our VW in Germany and I think it had round head lights as well, but can't remember.

2nd gti? all the photos I've posted here are of the same car (other than what's in my signature... )

rear of earlier rabbit.. non-swallowtail body style (gti's were only '83 & '84 in the US):

I don't believe Europe ever had square headlights on the Golf's (the Jetta's/Bora's did however). Likewise, once the Rabbit's switched to square headlights here, the US has never seen a single round headlight configuration (16v mk2 gti's and later model mk1 cabriolet's had dual round lights however) like the Europeans had in mk1's and mk2's. Any single round headlight setup in the US is either an import or it has an aftermarket/imported grille. That said, most enthusiast owned volkswagens have round headlights in the US.

Early mk2 square headlights ('85 and early '86 north american models):

all other stock mk2 headlights (aerodynamic or 'aero' lights) except the dual-round 16v gti lights:

(not stock bulbs however)

Don't look at the other parts of the cars too much if you're trying to figure out what North American cars looked like, since nearly every car I take photos of are modified in some way.

I'm sorry your thread was hijacked vette boss :(

That's exactly what my dad had. The blue one with those tail lights, round head lights and it was amazing. I loved it. I'm tempted to buy one just like it because of how amazing it was.

What engine is in the MKI now ?

my brothers?
first.. I'll note that the light blue rabbit I posted above has a vr6 turbo in it, with mk3 abs brakes, wheels, drivetrain, dash, etc. :D. The only indication is a 'turbo rabbit' badge in back, and a 'vr6' badge in front.

my brothers rabbit.. here's a quote from his engine swap thread a while ago:
