What did you hate most about the 'noughties'?

Greenwashing gone rampant.

World going to shit with terrorism, war, natural disasters. (mind you, this stuff happens every decade, but damn it started badly!)

People getting stupider. Related to that, reality TV and pop culture making it 'cool to be stupid'.

Consumerism and greed coming back to 1980's levels (along with some of the fashions, gah!), and boy did that turn out well..... (must... suppress... socialist... tendencies....that... doesn't.. work...either.....ahhhh!!)

My parents splitting up and my dad going all weird. (He's fine now though, and has a partner who is the best thing I think has ever happened to him).

Not being a teenager anymore and having to grow up and be a responsible adult (it sucks!)

Loosing two friends in car accidents.

Consumer items being so 'must have' that even old people and six year olds have the latest phone, ipod, console, PC or big screen TV....unless you're poor / uncool / can't be bothered. I still listen to CD's, I have a four year old phone and three year old cheap-ass crap computer and we still have CRT TV's in our house. Also, we have never had console of any kind in our house...ever. I'll be a nerd and stick with my books, thankyou. People looking down at you for that...ugh, why should you care? (!) (We're getting a set-top box to get digital TV soon, that's a step at least).

Finishing school. I never ever thought I'd miss it. But it was better than being an unemployed uni student, or being in the workforce for that matter. :?

"Ultimate Fighting" and its popularity.

Yes, THANK YOU! for mentioning that. Really, the past decade was filled with lowbrow culture, or as I call it "stupidity is to be praised, and intelligence to be shunned." Maybe it was the decade of the mediocre, I dunno.

I distinguish between the natural-fibres, Prius-loving fuckwits and people actually trying to preserve "nature". I have no problem with environmentalism when it is based on actual, proven science and is dealt with rationally.

If you were categorize, then that person would be called a conservationist, which is what I am.

The end of being able to fix things.

Why is it so damn hard to crack open electronics these days? Cars, too....it shouldn't be that hard to change a lightbulb.

American mobile phone companies. AT&T has cool phones, but Verizon has good coverage, and they both screw you over on data/txt/voice plans.......

Cable news networks. Well, the news in general. I want to hear about what's going on around the world, not celebrities.

Booze. There wasn't enough of it!

Some other bits that are were disturbing:

The absolute death of objective journalism. Even the local paper here got bought out because the new owner (an absolute fool if there ever was one) didn't like how certain things were covered and wanted to make the paper fit more in line with his views. Good grief. And, oh how everything is such a crisis! Doesn't matter if it's global warming or if Britney Spears' vag is hanging out, the news is going to tell us that WE ALL NEED TO PANIC NOW! OMG!!1!

Creationism. Look, I believe in God making the universe and all, but that's belief--not science. It has no place in science classes, for pete's sake.

I second the bit about "lowbrow culture." Reality television, manufactured cookie-cutter pop stars with little actual talent, attention whores in the news, VH1 actually managing to outsketch MTV in the lack of music content/crappy reality show department, etc., etc., etc. Ugh.

i'll agree with the "lowbrow culture" as well. you've only got to look at the celeb-wanna-be's that were launched on tonights celeb big brother to almost give up faith in humanity. i've never understood why there is some kind of obsession with humiliating yourself on tv just so you can have your 15 minutes of fame.
i can't understand those who go along to the launch nights as well. its in the minus degrees over here in england and there are people over there watching a bunch of half-wits walk into a house. its these things that make me wonder if the human race can ever be redeemed.
hopefully in the next decade, balance can be restored and for once i can put the tv on a saturday night and not have to sit through a so you think you can dance-the x factor-dancing on ice-strictly come dancing crap-o-thon.
*rant over, normal service shall now resume*

I'd have to say the endless "environmental concern" from people who really don't know anything. I was talking to someone the other day who was a massive environmentalist, but though global warming only started in the 20th century. That pretty much sums up how I feel about ecomentalists. Unless you actually know what you are talking about, shut the hell up. And they've become much more common in the past decade, because now its cool to be green.
These same people have repopularised second hand clothing and furniture and made it trendy. The "I saw you coming" sketches on Harry & Paul sum this up beautifully. Thick people buying immensly overpriced wank. I went to a shop in Fitzroy, a very fashionable part of Melbourne, recently, and it was basically an old ladies junk-filled garage but everything cost $3000. Yet the same people who buy this old outdated landfill always have the newest iPhone, and they always have the default iPhone ringtone, to remind others that they have an iPhone.
I also can't stand those people who constantly say they can't live without coffee. "Oh, I can't do that, I didn't have my coffee this morning". And its never a coffee, its a small black flat skinny capomugochino chai latte.
And no, you can live without coffee. Its not crystal meth. You're not clinically addicted. Its coffee.

2009

All of 2009

This. Except for the last month, which was amazing travelling to Singapore and Europe. Working for Centrelink was an awful experience. No one should be subject to that kind of abuse on a day-to-day basis.

Also my first attempt at uni...utter fail. Led to me getting the Clink job as I had no qualifications.

Roll on the teens, I say. Starting a degree I'm actually interested in, and having a plan is nice.

Rap and R'nB continually dominating the charts mainly.

1. the proliferation of reality tv
2. the proliferation of prime time game shows
3. the GW administration

The general proliferation of PC aka "political correctness" that pervades within every facet of our society.

The movement toward extremest-environmentalism and the popularisation of veganism and vegetarianism as hip trends for wankers. I don't mind what people do in the privacy of their own homes but I don't want it shoved down my throat and I hate the ones who really play it up when they're in public. It makes me sick.
