what do you use to manage your MP3 player?

Are you referring to managing music on your MP3 player or on your computer?

On my computer I manually manage my music. Takes longer but I haven't yet found a program that does exactly what I want and I haven't yet been bothered to write my own.

I have an older Creative Zen - one of the first gen ones, but the USB2 version (it's now more than 2 and 1/2 years old). 20Gig hard drive so managing music on that is important... The Creative program was (as you said) complete and utter cack. It's changed a lot to become the current version, but has always been shit.
And Windows Media player has often crashed when copying files onto my player... It manages like the first 20 or so then dies...
So for the last year and a half - maybe 2 years - I've been using the program Notmad Manager made by Red Chair Software. It's not as pretty as some programs, but boy is it functional! I have a paid for version of Notmad and it's certainly one of my best software purchases ever... (when you factor in price as well as how much it's helped me)
You can get it here: http://www.redchairsoftware.com/notmad/
Get a demo first, see if you like it.

And for me, the ability to stream music, over a network, to another computer to which the MP3 player isn't even connected to is just... well, amazing. And I've been using that facility for the last year on my old Mac laptop.
Basically for the features it has, the ease of use and the ability on the computer, it is better than any of the alternatives. It's not blazingly fast, but I can live with that given what it can do...

I've got a Creative Zen Touch... and the software that comes with it... :yucky: I still use it, because the player doesn't seem to be perfectly compatible with anything else. I'm not sure if it's the same software that you get with your player, probably is.

I'd heard about the Notmad software, but after paying a few hundred dollars for the mp3 player, I didn't feel like I should have to pay extra to buy software just to be able to use it. Maybe I'll have a look at the demo though...

Apart from that, I've had a bit of a look, and haven't been able to find any other programs that can manage music on the Creative mp3 players.

To be honest, as far as the monetary side of it goes, I felt exactly the same. When I bought my MP3 player, the things were even more expensive so I was a little miffed about this. But then I figured that $25 wasn't that much really for what was ultimately very useful (almost necessary) software. Plus I can use it on my next Zen at no extra cost! :p

Biggest problem is that you still have to use Creative's drivers which suck. Also, no Mac support for my Zen which is really irritating.

And yeah, I've really searched for other Zen compatible software. There really isn't any which is a bit of a pain...

I also manually manage my music. I only use the software that came with my Zen when I want to copy new music. I use Tag&Rename do do just that, and it all goes fine. However, I wish I were able to see mp3s inside folders, like you see with Windows. (offtopic: any player does that?)

I've got a Creative Zen Micro (5Gb) but I hate the stupid and slow program that's on the Creative CD.
And I'v got an iPod and I hate the stupid and slow program thats on the iPod CD.

So I got Anapod Explorer. Basically, its the best program to use for an iPod. Its sooo easy and so functional. Best of all is they have software for various MP3's including the Creative Zen.

Trust me on this, its the best program you could use.

Check em out at:

why can't they make those things that when you plug it in a 'removable device' appears, even without drivers. just like a normal mp3 player. it's so easy

^Yeh I hear you.

Well actually you can with the iPod. All you have to do is go to the removable device and then enable the option which allows you to see hidden files. Then there are folders where your music is placed and you can chuck them there.

I think its the same as the Zen..

well the thing is now, that the creative software does NOT see my Zen micro.

I can connect to it in all the other programs, but in Creative MediaSource and in Zen Micro Media Explorer I don't see anything anymore.

My player itself does not say 'connected' anymore, it just charges the battery... Really annoying.
I updated it to 2.20.05 or something but the problem started just yesterday.
