Are you referring to managing music on your MP3 player or on your computer?
On my computer I manually manage my music. Takes longer but I haven't yet found a program that does exactly what I want and I haven't yet been bothered to write my own.
I have an older Creative Zen - one of the first gen ones, but the USB2 version (it's now more than 2 and 1/2 years old). 20Gig hard drive so managing music on that is important... The Creative program was (as you said) complete and utter cack. It's changed a lot to become the current version, but has always been shit.
And Windows Media player has often crashed when copying files onto my player... It manages like the first 20 or so then dies...
So for the last year and a half - maybe 2 years - I've been using the program Notmad Manager made by Red Chair Software. It's not as pretty as some programs, but boy is it functional! I have a paid for version of Notmad and it's certainly one of my best software purchases ever... (when you factor in price as well as how much it's helped me)
You can get it here:

Get a demo first, see if you like it.
And for me, the ability to stream music, over a network, to another computer to which the MP3 player isn't even connected to is just... well, amazing. And I've been using that facility for the last year on my old Mac laptop.
Basically for the features it has, the ease of use and the ability on the computer, it is better than any of the alternatives. It's not blazingly fast, but I can live with that given what it can do...
