Hi there, i wanna buy a graphics card but don't know if it will run on my pc.... Here are the specs of the card

Nvidia 6200

My PC :

Intel Celeron 1.7 GHz
ASUS Motherboard with AGP 4X.
some PCI slots...
133 MHz SDRAM [512 + 128]

My main question is if an AGP 8x card work on a 4X slot.

Pl help.

Yes it should..even though it says that the interface speed is 8x. It'll be a bit slower of course.

I have read around forums that older cards @8x have worked @4x...but some have voltage problems?

I am pretty sure that it will work, but you will not get the full benefits of the card since it can only transfer to your computer at 1/2 its rated speed. Not to say that it will suck, just saying that it can't perform to its true potential.

even fast videocards like the X800 i have only suffer 5% or so in performance when AGP 4x is used instead of AGP 8x.
With a 6200 there wont be any difference between using it at 4x or at 8x AGP.

if you dont spend over $150 on a videocard, you should definately go for a 128MB card instead of a 256 MB one.

You can never run games that can use more then 128MB smoothly at a resolution at which they can use more then 128MB anyway. So its no use. And probabely they used slower RAM as well, and you pay extra for it.

my suggestion: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1446527&CatId=0
And it cheap, which is good because a Celeron 1.7GHz is quite slow anyway.

I went to PC World today and this is what I found out :

nVidia 6200 - Minimum Requirements ?59.99
Pentium III or Equivalent Processor
128 MB RAM...
blah blah blah
Motherboard with AGP 4x/8X

nVidia 6600 LE - Minimum Requirements ?79.99
Pentium III or Equivalent Processor
128 MB RAM...
blah blah blah
Motherboard with AGP 2.0x or Higher

Looking at these minimum requirements, the cards should be able to work on my PC. I asked the sales assistant there but he had no clue what so ever of what I was asking him...so I ask you guys again :D

As suggested by Swek, I am thinking of getting the 6600 instead of 6200...what do u guys think..advice + comments please...

ANd Londoners, please tell me if there are any other stores where I can get it a bit cheaper....

Hey racheel gamar,

I have an Asus mobo as well and it is a 4x only agp. My mobo is P4B533 btw. It runs socket 478 intel chips. I just learned this because i think my mobo died. SO it's being sent in for RMA.

I bought a geforce 6600GT 128mb, which is better than that 6600 LE, for like $150USD. My graphics card runs at the 4x and it is very nice. I could play most games at its medium to high graphics level.

the 6200 is out of the 6600gt's league for sure.

Nowadays, the top/decent cards starts at 6600, then move up to 6800 and 7800.
Of course GT are always the better ones. Go for the 6600GT 128mb agp. U wont regret it. But on a 1.7ghz celeron, then ur games are gonna be limited by that.

My specs:
Asus p4b533
2.66ghz P4 533mhz FBS
1 gig of ram running at PC2100 speeds(limited by this one stick).
ATA133 hdds, nothing special.
Leadtek A6600GT TDH 128mb ( i hear this one has one of the better cooling systems out there along with XFX)

I'd go with the 6200, its cheap and with your outdated celeron you're being limited to games where it won't make much of a difference.
Other choices in that range would be the ati 9600's 9550's, and geforce 5700.

The 6200 has better features that will never run smoothly with the card though (newer generation compared to the ones I've listed) :p

Plus, a few 6200's are mod-able to 6600's. They're the same chip just on the 6200 versions they mask some of the pipelines (they may be busted is another reason they may have chosen to make it a 6200).

PS, agp version 2.0 = agp 4x, agp version 3.0 = agp 8x. if thats puzzling anyone.

I could not find a 6600 GT there, the one I found was 256MB 6600 LE... I might change tho mobo and processor in the near future so keeping that in mind, I would try to get the best i can afford (? 100).

In a year you'll be able to get something twice as fast for the same price. The graphics card evolution pace is probably one of the fastest in terms of computer hardware at this time.

Plus i'd be looking at a pci-e mobo then, even now.

If I were you I would go with a ATI 9800 That would be a much better card then a 6200
probably at least 2 to 3 better

For 100GBP you want the best you can get,

ATi x300 | nVidia 6200 - Low End
ATi x600/700 | nVidia 6600 - Mid Range
ATi x800/850 | nVidia 6800 - High End

ATi x1800 | nVidia 7800 - Very High End

AGP

I think the 6800XT and X800GTO are worth the price, and are much more powerful than 6600/6200.

Check the above links, and the prices, I kept them between 90-110GBP, and as I said a 6800/X800 is pretty darn good for the price, the GeCube X800 has a 3yr warranty too.

If you later decide to upgrade your pc, a 6600GT is a powerful card in itself.

Well, my graphics card fan started rattling very very badly a few weeks back. I put up with it for a while, but eventually it was getting sooo irritating I ripped the fan off. My GC is now passively cooled but I've turned on the case fan that sits right over it on the side of the computer.
However, I've gotten close to overcooking it once (without doing much) so this can't go on forever.

Originally I'd planned to replace mobo and CPU by now, but as I'm unemployed and thus have no income, I won't be doing that. So Raheel, I'm in the same boat as you - I need a new AGP graphics card (though my Mobo takes 8x AGP). I had considered just getting one of the Zalman GC coolers, but tbh my graphics card has always taken a beating in Far Cry and Half Life 2, so definately replacement time.

Anyway, I've been considering a nVidia Geforce 6600GT. I've got an AMD Athlon XP 2400+ (so not that fast either - 2GHz). I'm probably gonna go for this one as it's best price/performance I can get, and the one I want (an XFX one - This one) is not too expensive. As I definately will be buying a new mobo and cpu within at least the next 12 months (my computer is already over 2 years old which is when I was planning to start replacing stuff) I don't want to spend over ?150.

I also have the problem that in order to buy this graphics card - or for that matter any new graphics card - I need to upgrade my Power Supply as the current 300W one just isn't enough and I think it's near it's limit already. That's another ?60 or so (going for a silent one).

Anyway. Of interest to you I guess is that I've always found PC World to be pricey (though they are slowly dropping prices). For the last three years, pretty much everything computer related I've bought off the 'net.
Primarily I use eBuyer but I've also used Komplett, Scan Computers, Dabs and Overclockers. I really recommend you check those places out before buying at PC World, or at any other computer shop in London for that matter.

Sorry to hijack the thread a little but for those that know (sorry Bigfoot, didn't understand your explanation) is it worth going for 128 or 256MB RAM? It's been 2 years since I last looked into graphics cards, and things have changed a lot (256Meg cards were very very expensive)!
Basically the graphics card I'm considering (The XFX linked above) comes with configurations of 128 and 256 Megs of RAM, both of which are DDR3. I've got 1024Megs of Computer RAM, if that's any help at all and my AGP aperature is currently set to 64 Megs (though it goes up to 256).

Cheers guys.

Edit: LOL TechZ - timing! :) But, thanks for that as actually that's helped me - somehow I missed the XFX 6800XT at ebuyer.
What I want to know is, if the XFX 6600GT I found earlier (This one) is more expensive than the 6800XT you found at eBuyer (and bearing in mind Komplett and eBuyer are usually quite similar in prices) - which one is better? I know normally not to bother using prices as a comparitive measure but I thought the 6800 was faster than 6600? So it should be more expensive, not cheaper - right? :?

I'd buy the cheaper one and invest the remaining money in the CPU.

1.7 Celery isn't enough to feed the new graphics card.

To buy a brand new pc, i need more money..(which i don't have)..

Can someone pl tell me the difference between a 128MB 256Bit and 26 128 Bit. which is better.

It gets complicated when you look at details like that, but it has to do with bandwidth the memory and gpu communicate with each other. Newer cards have larger ones. Its a detail, it is kinda important but if you're going to looking at every detail like that you're gonna get lost. Just stick to which gpu is on there.

And people aren't realising what a outdated processor that celeron is, its the first kind and they were crap, I mean we're talking about 1 gig p3 performance here.

I'm also guessing he won't have more than 256 mb of sd-ram.

Sticking in a graphics card like a 6200 is already overkill. Plus I'm sure you'll be able to get a 6800 bargin model for the same price in 6 months.
