I've been getting really sick and tired of McAfee after 2 years of having a really bogged down computer and the annoying updates.

A rather simple question really. Which antivirus software do you recommend?

As of right now, I'm thinking of getting AVG Internet Security with a 2 year subscription because I really liked their free edition I have running on my laptop. But would this really be a step up from McAfee, security-wise?

Norton 360 Version 2.0

I should have posted some qualification for my recommendation of AVG. I'm the director of I.T. at a college and am responsible for over 300 machines.

Norton is a pain in the butt because it's always in your face and annoys users constantly. It's interface is confusing and it's slow. Mcafee is fine but slow. AVG does everything it needs to do, does it quickly and stays out of your way.

Norton 360 Version 2.0

Norton can die in a fucking fire. If anybody brings in a broken laptop to my IT division, and it's got Norton on it, it's the first thing to go. I don't care if they just bought it that afternoon because the tool at Best Buy told them to get it, it gets removed.

ESET Nod32

McAfee and Norton are the AOL of the anti-virus world, just say no.

If you're spending money Nod32 is good, but if you like AVG there is nothing really wrong with it, but really you can do the free programs and be just fine. A free firewall, some good spyware scanners, and avg free (or nod32 sorta free ;) ) and a good load of common sense and you don't need the fancy internet security. That stuff is made for old people who get scared into thinking there are hackers scanning the internet looking for innocent people to pick on... which isn't the case.

Yeah if you're going to pay for nothing else, pay for AV. I personally use AVG free and I'm more than happy with it.

Another vote for NOD32. AVG isn't bad, but the updating process sucks (it manages to fully load one of your computer's cores for the duration of the update process and gives you annoying popups) and it has a habit of not seeing trojan horses in keygens or cracks. I use NOD32 at home and at one of my clients, and i'm in the process of convincing another of my clients to go with NOD32 aswell. It's incredible value for money too. A year's subscription is only 30 eur, and a renewal is even less.

I used to recommend AVG, but version 8 has really become a bloated and slow piece of software. I had problems updating the virus definitions (our whole household, actually) so I switched to Avira AntiVir. It is light years ahead of AVG. You'll need to do some tinkering to make the program unobtrusive but after that it's great. I also heard the new Norton 2009 is incredible too. Supposedly it installs in under a minute and consumes the least amount of resources compared to other AVs.
