2003 BMW E46 M3
As a current Porsche owner having a 1986 944 Turbo I feel it's time to upgrade. So.......

Which it is gonna be?

1999 Porsche Carrera 2 or 2002 BMW M3

I want to spend around $30,000

I wanna hear everything good and everything bad, spare me no details!

Nah, get the Porsche.

E46 M3 is just a 3-series, right? Which came as your choice of coupe/sedan/wagon, with your choice of 4/6 cylinder engines, in your choice of petrol/diesel. So it's just a fast 3-series.

Porsche was built as a semi-exotic GT car from the very beginning. Better to have the low-end exotic, than the high-end grocery-getter.

Also, the Porsche's engine sounds much better, and 9 out of 10 scientists agree -- women can't resist a Porsche.

even though M3 sounds like a good buy, but the Porsche is much cooler and better to own. Can't go wrong with the Porsche...

On the opposite, you can fit 3, and even 4, adults in an M3, with some luggage.

Depends on what is your "daily" car.

It's not a daily car for me. I have a Suburban for bad weather or if I need to haul around gear or people. I couldn't care less whether or not my 2nd "fun" car has back seats or a trunk.

I just think $30k might buy me something 3 years newer, virtually just as fast, that will cost less to repair, and less to insure.

It's just not as awe inspiring as the Porsche name which I have grown used to over the years.

M3 all the way!

if it's a replacement for a porsche, i would think you would need to go porsche.

The m3 is neat, but I think the 911 is just a bit more special. Especially if it's not a daily car.

M3 is more practical, 911 is more special I guess.
Just test drive them both if you can, I bet you'll know what you like more. Don't make decision based on what kids on the internet (no offence to anybody ;)) have to say about it.

Go with the porsche

I would go for the M3... Won't be much difference in performance, I reckon, at least in a straight line.
And bottom of the range doesn't seem right... Everytime you'll see a "proper Porsche" you will think -> I should have saved 10 Grand more...
While if you drive the M3, you can probably soak the guy in the ?99 Carrera 2 and feel really good about it...

Buba

Never driven either of those car, but I'm pretty sure I'd get the Porsche.

You shouldnt only think of it in terms of "the porsche because its cooler" you should consider maintenance, overall cost, the mileage ur going to get for 30k thats about 50-65k for an E46 M3, typically 2001 (uglier 18in rims; only comes in 6spd, not smg). I have no clue on the mileage of a Porsche for that price. Nor do I know the typical problems a porsche owner would have. The M3 has its problems but since its an older car, most of them will probably be fixed though expect things you wouldnt consider normal maintenance to be changed.

I say go drive them both. They are completely different cars.
No matter what people say, you should buy the car you like best.

I think both M3 and Carrera are the most obvious fast cars to buy.
They aren't eyecatching at all, but you know that people will want to see what "prick" is driving it . . . if you know what I mean!

I can tell you that both cars are FUN to drive. They're fun because they take a lot of concentration and skill. If you aren't paying attention to what you do, both cars will bite you . . . hard. The Carrera is very understeery (until you provoke it to oversteer) while the M3 loves to slide its tail around. The M3 has flashy styling while the Carrera is more unassuming. They're both very, very good cars. Again, you just need to drive them both and see what feels right.

Even though I hate the bling bling styling, I like the M3. I drove the regular 6spd one before in a wide open parking lot before. I can tell you that the car is everything you've ever loved about the 3-series x10. Even though the regular 3-series is now a luxury cruising pig, the M3 takes you back to the E30 era when all 3-series were wild and fun to drive.

And I've never liked rear engined Porsches. I gave it many chances but I never liked how it drove. Maybe I'm just unskilled at handling one or haven't driven the right cars. Even so, they are very fast reacting cars . . . just very understeery.

depends how you want to be seen by other road users.

If you want to seem like a prick - get the BMW

If you want to seem like the ultimate prick - pick the porsche :p

Fuck the German cars... Buy a TVR, Cheaper than both, twice as fast, twice as cool, PEOPLE WILL STARE (which is what you really want), It might break down a bit:)

both of those car are stereotypical wannabe-rich cars around here.
you buy a BMW because all the neighbors drive one or a Merc, so if you showed up in a ford taurus, you wouldn't fit in.
the porsche is the middleage crisis car. every driver of one i have seen around here has graying hair, an expanding waitline, and looks like they just got done doing your taxes (which i'm sure they just did).

of course this is just around here, since i drive through malibu, santa monica, and westalke village (the richer parts of this area) these cars are awfully common.
whenever i go to my bank, there's always either a 360 or a gallardo, a maserati, an assortment of M3's and M5's, and the lot of porsches. kind of fun to park there though. but i'm sure you see what i mean.

test drive both and see which you like. if you are buying the car only for the bling or image aspect of it, you might want to reconsider. if you want fun and performance, then try each out.
