I have seen sinkholes that formed around sewer pipes or some other round object sort of mimic that shape as it grew, and I have also seen sinkholes swallow a house whole. Most of the ones I have seen have had a somewhat smooth wall on them, and if this was caused by water saturation/ degradation then it makes all that much more sense that it would be so smooth but I have certainly never seen one of this size!

I think the shape has a lot to do with the disappearance of structural support for the dirt.
