Why are the headlights of trackcars taped?

the tape is there incase the headlights break.
now if they break the glass is kept on the tape and will not spread around the track. 8)

Huh? No, Bas is right.

actually, in lemans 24hr they TRY to shine lights at people
its distracting and u may mess up someones rythm =]

but yeah also it prevents stone chips ... somewhat...
if a big rock hits u, u're screwed anyway =]

in Japan GT car... I see drivers flash other cars to distract them or to tell them that I am overtaking you... they do it alot... anyone know the reason?

The X over the headlights are for pointing at the clouds (park on a hill), to summon the x-men... duh. ;)

They signal to indicate what side of the road they are going to stay on if they're getting passed by a (much) faster car, correct?

Exactly, helps avoid accidents.

my wrx has plasic headlights, no tape needed ;)

its to stop the glass issue (in oz/cams anyway)
Tape would stop them from getting scratched though. :p

And plastic can still shatter.

Depends on the plastic. For instance polycarbonate (=used in racing car windows) is basically indestructible.

its already scratched ;)

the polycarbinate headlights on the bugeye and slanteye wrx's (new shape) dont need to be taped, as per the cams (oz motorsport governing body) laws.

the fog lights are glass, and they do.

most people in oz dont actually tape them, but use clearskins (a 3m product) or school book clear contact film stuff.

its only a car!

Subie's paint aint the greatest quality anyway, it practically chips if you sneeze at it. ;)
