Why is it called "Fifth" Gear? Not Sixth Gear?

Fifth Gear started as a sort of competitor of Top Gear correct? So I assume they wanted another name for the 'highest gear'. But then why did they decide to give it only 5 gears? I'm sure sports cars had 6 gears when the show was created so why not call it "Sixth Gear" ??? :D

And since the new M5 is out, sixth gear isn't even the hightest anymore...

I guess, it has something to do with the fact its on channel five... ;-)

Still, I would think that they would come up with something a little more creative, especially since Top Gear was already around. Very similiar titles....

I guess, they wanted to create competition... So far that hasn't worked out. IMO the current FG stuff is pretty close to TG, but Clarkson and his boys surely will come up with a great season...

And tonight there will be a new fab episode, i am just gonna love it to bits, or bytes ;)

Tonight?s episode will top both series, at least it has three tvrs, tuscan2, sagaris and giveaway chimaera.

that FGs problem .. they are so desperat for views that they give aeay a car in every episode .. TG is the biggest show .. and they do the opposite.. make people call inn so they can spend money on .. stuff :p

Only half the cars they drive have 6 gears and Top Gear was already taken. I beleive it's the same producer that started both shows so both names had to come out of the same head lol.

Actually, BBC decided to cancel Top Gear so channel five "bought" the show. Decided to call it fifth gear for the reasons stated by Buba.

Would have liked to have seen their faces when BBC decided to bring back Top gear  and with Clarkson hosting it...
