Just wondering why and how they were named, Chicago for example.

Corners are named at a lot of racetracks. I'm not really sure where or how they come up with names though.

It's no different than naming streets in the city. It's a lot easier to refer to "Gambon" than "that part near the northeast corner at the end of the swooping curve" or whatever. And it's a lot more interesting than Turn 1, Turn 2, Turn 3.

yeah and the penultimate corner is called that beacause it is the 2nd last corner. penultimate meaning next to last.

Hammerhead is called that cause it looks like the head of a hammer? well... it does when james is explaining what could happen in the comedy handling segement.

A mate and I race go karts every now and then and we have all our own names for corners on the tracks we go to. Makes it a lot more fun

Gamboncorner I believe came from Michael Gambon who did something there.

Don't know about the rest.

Gambon put the car on two wheels through that corner sideways...:lmao:.

And now you know :)

Thanks for the answers folks, I've only used this site for downloading eps and the episode guide until recently, there's a lot of great stuff on these forums. I looked but I didn't know if someone had asked the corner question before or not, I was worried someone would light me up on my second post..

Leppy, is that Richard's actual ad? I like the 700$ spent in the last 6 months part.. T'was a gooood episode, it's one I show to people who've never heard of Top Gear before, it and the Historic People Carrier Racing Championship clip. Those two segments always turn them into fans of the show.

Some corners are seen on known Race tracks like the Stuttgart and stuff... I think its on the Nurburgring

When the map of the track goes on the website it will have the corner names all marked on.

Gambon is so named because its where Michael Gambon launched the liana. I'm not certain where the other names come from, I'll try and find out though, because its an interesting bit of trivia.

I literally never laught out loud from things I read or see on the internet, but I actually did laugh out loud from that!

Lol, that was funny, 'course it would have been better if I hadn't seen the thread explaining why bbc.co.uk/topgear/ was posting first. It's all in the timing I guess.

Nice Corolla in your sig, zenon, I myself am an owner of an 80's Toyota that looks pretty good, though it's nowhere near as sporty as that...

I know I'm bringing this thread back from the dead, but I can't find how Chicago was named. I think I understand all the other names, but Chicago still baffles me.

Did anyone figure it out?

top gear magazine had a map of the new test track in the preview issue of the last season (not this one that's been delayed). the map had explanations for the names of the corners. i remember someone had posted the map on this forum.

Isnt one of the corners called Bacharach or was that renamed Gambon?
