Windows 7, so who's tried it?

My Home Premium has come and I'll be installing it on my HTPC when it has backed up the recorded programmes.
I can download Professional tomorrow which I got through the student offer thing.

It is oooooooooouuuuuutttttt!!!!!!

Will try to sneak out and get it today when my mum takes my sibling to/from school- daresay she won't approve of a study break to buy the latest Windows release

I won a Microsoft competition and they are sending me a special limited edition of Windows 7 Ultimate. It was supposed to arrive before the release worldwide, but thanks to DHL :( now I'm going to have to wait until tomorrow to get it.

I just picked up my student media version of 7 ultimate 64 bit and I'll be installing very soon. I'll post some impressions.

Doesn't appear to be any cheap version for students here in Australia yet. (asides from MSDNAA)

Did you get the Steve Ballmer Signature Edition?

For those who are wondering what that is, it's Windows 7 Ultimate in a rather nice golden case with Steve Ballmers signature but unlike the regular versions it also comes preloaded with the Steve Ballmer theme including Steve Ballmer notification sounds ("I LOVE THIS COMPANY" is the default logon sound) and Steve Ballmer desktop wallpapers.

AU$50 +$14 shipping if you want it

for students for home premium upgrade,

you can use your .edu.au account and .edu if your uni owns the TLD as well (so you can do it twice)
so student.monash.edu.au works as well as student.monash.edu

:D

I'll keep you guys posted when it goes on to the employee purchase program (when big companies get "discount" software for buying shit loads of it)

well, i downloaded windows 7 (via student discount). Unfortunately, i have 2 tests tomorrow morning so installing it will have to wait until after classes. though, earlier (before suffering HDD failure), i used the Win7 RC. and even then, it was better than vista by a long run.

Finishing my download right now but I've got 6 med school tests next week so I think I'll be waiting until next weekend to do anything with it :?

yeah, I'm buying it tomorrow hopefully (don't qualify for the student discounts as I'm only a lowly HSC student) and won't be installing it until November 5th at the earliest as I have exams to study for and do between now and then :(
Might pick up a netbook with Wi7 on it soon though to see what it is like and as a backup in case my installation goes catastrophically wrong *gulp*

I doubt it, but since it's 12:10, I'm up, and I have to work most of tomorrow...have any stores been advertising that they'll be open at Midnight for Windows 7? *laughs* Typing this, it sounds more hilarious that it did even in my head.

^ Harvey Norman was in Australia. Really wanted to go

Downloaded, installed, and running on it. Still have yet to try everything, but it should be fun.

you'd buy a netbook just to try it out and to have as a back up? that seems like a little much money to spend just for that... lol

It seems there's a pretty common error with the student download where it can't write files because the folder is "read-only." It looks to me like it's not installing the file that turns the installation files into a burnable image.

I haven't tried it yet but it looks like someone found a fix: http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/30470-make-bootable-iso-student-d-l.html#post320334

so the student download does make an iso file? thats good because i was quite annoyed when i found out it wasnt an iso.

Ok so like...wtf?

Win 7 creates a Users folder for all my user files...that's fine. Anyone care to explain why it has a ghost folder named Documents and Settings that takes exactly the same size on the disk?

I know MS did this for compatibility issues but it should only be a shortcut...These files actually exist on my HDD and if I delete something in there it still exists in my Users folder which means it's obviously not just a shortcut like MS say it is.

This is 14GB wasted for nothing....The whole partition is 60GB and it's filling up. Can I safely delete stuff in there?

14 GB in Documents and Settings? That doesn't sound right at all. I'm not even sure it's there by default.... I'll have to check when I get home. I do now that some badly coded legacy applications create it in an attempt to find your personal folder.

I hope that, when you shut it down, it yells "DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS" at you.

It isn't. The student download is an .exe with several files, and microsoft's own downloader software.
