Okay, i like to say im kind of well versed in the usage of computers and what not, but i've come across a problem and im completely stumped.

I accidentally burned out the PC i built when i brought it heree to college, the HDD was fine so i got a new computer and ran it as a slave cuz for whatever reson the PC wouldnt detect Windows(professional) on the old drive. So im running Home Edition :wall: :yucky: and now when i try to move certain files over it says heres permissions problems. i have NO idea how to solve this because they said just to make a profile w/ the name name and password was on the old system and i did that but it didnt work, im guesing cuz of the differences in the OSs. does ANYBODY know how i can solve this i will become their best friend EVER
 
can you copy the files instead of moving them ? :whistle:
...maybe a stupid question, but sometimes it's the easy thing one hasn't thought of
 
If you log on as admin in safe mode, you should be able to re set the permissions of the files.. After you have loggin in as admin in safe mode. Right click the folder. then to properties.. then permissions or something like that.. I don't really remember I havn't had to do that in a while.
 
I have the feeling you'r talking about files in DOCUMENTS And SETTINGS.

First you have to know, when you change your mobo, XP will need a new licence. Maybe that's why it won't boot.
Second, for getting your settings and files from one pc to another, you can use a tool from XP called 'Files and settings transfer wizard'. But to do this, you will have to put your HD in your old pc and run the wizard there. Put the file (the wizard puts everything in 1 file) somewhere (HD, DVD,...). Then run the wizard again on your new pc, but with the option that you want to put the files there. Let the wizard do its thing and your ready to go.

I FIXED IT!!!! I did what stapler123 said ur freakin AMAZING. I was sort of aware of that but i had no idea tht something like that would work. Windows security is AWFUL. Theres a backdoor i forget exactly what it is but if you forget ur password you(or a baddie) can reset it but the thing is, if you call Windows telling them you forgot they TELL you about the exploit! :lol:

I encountered something similar in the past, instead I was borrowing a drive from someone else.
What I did to get around it then was (i don't remember exactly, but it was something like this):
- go to the drive / folder / file in question -> right click -> properties
- then security -> advanced -> owner tab -> change owner to -> select an admin user.
 
since there is a thread about this already... I have a question, I have a desktop computer with windows xp pro and the guy who built it for me stupidly put like 6 30gb partition for my 200GB harddisk... is there anyway to change that?
 
Usually not without having to backn-up and re-install everything first, Mabee go back to the guy and make him do it right


there are partitioning programs you can buy that can do non destructive partitioning though (no bakcing up and re installing) I do beleive partition magic is one of the. I've never used on though. I'm usually all for doing a fresh install of windows, because I like pain... pain is good.
 
I've heard of partition magic but I don't know if I can trust it... does anyone have any experience with that?
And I won't have to go back to the guy to do it again, I can do it myself, its just that it'll be a pain
 
DO a full format and set everything up the way you want. I pushed it off forever too, but finally broke down two weeks ago...went from Win98 to XP Pro, got rid of all the crap on my HD, and am running fresh and clean. I don't regret it.
 
I've used partition magic in the past. Worked without problems. (Doesn't mean it couldn't go wrong. I'd burn whatever is important to you to a dvd)
 
Yea i've wiped my HDD a few times i just back some music, videos, and my documents and settings.
