World Community Grid

There's a lot of distributed computing projects going on like this. SETI is just most known one. There was a human genome project, and as far as I know it ended succesfully. Some of them search for answers to scientific problems, mathematic, cryptographic, financial... the list continues. Like climate prediction, or cure for some illness or simply cracking codes to satellite channels crypt system :)

Then there even was "Distributed Shakespeare Monkey Project", which is based on the theory that if you have enough monkeys banging randomly on typewriters, they will eventually type the works of William Shakespeare. Dunno if that actually started thou :)

i read about it a while ago:
it worked till a certain extend: they got 19 characters right in a row... that was the record.
