ABU DHABI: A single-digit car registration plate was auctioned off for more than $6.8mn in the United Arab Emirates yesterday, beating the previous world record by more than 10 times.
The number plate ?5? was bought for 25.2mn dirhams ($6.86mn) in Abu Dhabi, the Wam state news agency reported.
It said businessman Talal Khouri placed the highest bid in the first auction of its kind in the UAE, with the proceeds going to charitable projects for people with special needs.
The price beat a previous world record set last July in Yorkshire, northern England, where the numberplate ?M1? was knocked down for ?331,500 or $657,160 ? at current exchange rates. ? AFP

6.8Million? Thats alot... even for a person living in Hong Kong, where license plates constantly go for over 200-500k USD with the highest at 2mil USD.

poptya... different cultures will have different valuations of different numbers, I'm not sure what 5 means in UAE... its just like how in HK, license plates like 3 and 8 are most valuable.

The lower the number, the more you can get away with.
1 is reserved for members of the Emirates' royal families.
He probably bought 5 from some cousin of Sheikh Maktoum

lol it will be funny if someone gets a screw driver and takes the number plate! owned!

Aren't single digit plates over in that part of the world reserved for the ruling family?

I remember reading that in Saudi Arabia (I think it was) the lower the # on your plate the better treated you are when you're pulled over by the police.

I would pay for "42" but not "5."

Single 8 would be the most expensive plate in any Asian country... and its true you do get treated better with a more expensive license plate. When we're in Malaysia, because most of our cars have single digit plates... police more often rather take our bribe than fine us as we bribe them better... plus alot of them have a title equivalent to a "sir" in England so they don't really like to piss people with single digit plates off.
