I'm thinking of changing the 3d card at the minute, I currently have a Gainward Geforce FX 5200 256MB AGP and its quite poo TBH. Runs HL2 Beautifully but runs nothing else anyway decently!

I'm thinking of going for the XFX GeForce 6600GT 128mb AGP for ?205?

Anyone here have one? Any Good ? Because I'm going from 256MB to 128MB would I be taking a step back ?

If anyone could explain this to me in car terms it would be appreciated

My system spec is...

Gigabyte GA-8S661FXM-RZ Motherboard
Intel Pentium 4 HT @ 3218mhz
Elixir 1024MB DDR RAM
Gainward Geforce FX5200 256MB
V-Stream Xpert TVR PCI 7134 TV & FM tuner
160GB WCD HD
40Gb Maxtor HD
Philips DVD RW +/- Dual Layer DV1640P
Philips DVD ROM 5016L
Philips 17' LCD 170s
Typhoon 2 X 75W Sattelite Speakers with Amplifier and a 200W Subwoofer
2 X 4" Blue Cold Cathodes under front cover
2 X 2" Red LED behind monitor

205 euros is too much for that card. Specially f its the agp version.
THe normal price is more around the 170 mark, for 200 you should be able to buy a normal 6800.

mm, after looking at some english stores it seems your prices are a bit higher on certain products. Heres some stuff i picked out.

leadtek 6800le:

Gainward:

Several 6600 gts for around 115 pounds.
And going back 128mb isn't going to matter cause these cards are way faster.

6800 150 pounds:

There should also be some ati x700 pros aroud, but I'd onl consider those if they would cost less than a 6600gt.

A 9800pro could also be an option, but only around the 100 euro mark. It is a bit slower than the 6600gt's.

XFX GeForce 6600 GT PCI-E 256 MB DDR3 is 289 Euros here. thats about 196 Pounds. i think you are being ripped here. Look around, you will find a better for at a lower price.

What will you do with the old one?

I had the XFX GeForce 6600 GT - it's very good, but nonetheless quite simplistic. It's fairly noisy, but has good performance. Overall I'd say it's AVERAGE.

I've got the Gainward Golden Sample 6600GT in my system - that's the best 6600GT you can get for the money. btw - do not worry about how much RAM it has on board, it means nothing really.

i wouldnt recommend a 6600GT, you'd better get a 6800LE or 6800 if youre willing to spend more money. The 6800LE is cheaper but with a little effort (and luck, unlocking pipelines and overclocking) it can perform as a 6800GT...

The price I got was from Komplett.

I've absolutely no idea about overclocking etc, I just want a good graphics card to match the rest of my system.

My Budget is around ?220

I'd definately stick with the 6600GT. For AGP, the best one is:

Gainward Ultra/1960 XP Golden Sample GLH

but if you just want the basics then go for:

Club3D GeForce 6600 GT

It's a new kid on the block and it's very good and very cheap.

All 6600gt's follow the same basic referance design from nvidia.

The huge differences between brands is the ram, some like putting faster stuff on there. But theres a price to that, and if the golden sample is 180 pounds like that "review" says you have to be insane to pay that.
Also check the core speeds, sometimes those differ a bit, not that much often.

Guess I'm insane then :D

It runs at 600/1200, and it's a little beast :) I'm hoping to get another and run them SLI when the price comes down.

Ok, both the komplett links are the cards I mentioned. As you have no desire to overclock then the Club3D one is probably your best bet out of them two.

The best AGP card currently (for this price range) is:

BFG GeForce 6600 GT OC

http://www.pcpro.co.uk/custompc-reviews/72880/bfg-geforce-6600-gt-oc.html

My info about the Gainward was a bit out of date - the Gainward is the best PCI-Express card (which is what I have), but the BFG beats it on the AGP front.

I would wait a bit, since the new 7800 is coming out this week, I will drop a bit more...

Buba

Its already out. For a fabulous price of 600-ish euros you can buy a 7800gtx. Most hardware sites have a review up.

That doesn't mean the prices of the older cards is going to drop though. Thats never been the case honestly. It means the old highend cards will be taken out of production, but most of the time the prices still stay the same.
A 9800xt is still about 350 euros in holland.

The 9800pro is a simular story, far after the x800 series was launched the 9800pro stayed the same price. Around the 200 euro mark. It started dropping at around the turn of the year i think, now its a bargin at around 100euros.

How the 6800 series have been dropping these last few weeks could be linked to this new card comeing out. But in the past its never really happened.

Price drops these days are more to be competitive in certain price ranges. Really its too hard for me to explain cause I don't know the exact motives, its more what i've seen.

All i'm saying, don't expect anything to go down, cept in a manner how all computer hardware goes down, but thats more over a period of months rather than weeks.

This is the probably theon I'm going to settle on

XFX GeForce 6600GT 128MB GDDR3 AGP8X, Tv-Out, Dual-DVI, Retail

http://komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=305051&view=detailed

My other usual Hardware haunts have dissapeared suchas peats.ie, so Komplett is the only one I trust at the mo ...

Can someone explain to me in English what the advantages of this card are ?
