Your Camera Equipment

The subpar kit lens on the 350D was one of my main reasons for going with Nikon. Every 350D owner I've shot with got rid of their kit lens almost immediately or didn't bother buying it in the first place.

The D50 and 350D bodies are very similar in quality, but my opinion is that there is a large disparity between the kit lenses.

Well what is everyone's recommendation on a decent lens for the 350D?

I want something that is good with wide angle(hence hte 18mm) and something i can zoom decently with.

I've been looking at the 28mm-105mm lens. But it doesn't seem to do wide angles that well.

$250USD!!!!! GEES!

of course i'll buy the 50mm f/1.8 lens because it's a must and cheap.

The kit lens will be just fine unless you do prints. The sharpness of it or rather un-sharpness shows when you use a 100% crop, and you won't use that anyways. And alot of that can be fixed with unsharpen-mask in photoshop. It's light and has a very wide angle, great for a walk-around lens. Wouldn't worry about that when buying your first SLR.
I wouldn't buy a big expensive lens to learn with! ;)

okay, I came to the same conclusion.

I'm going to buy the 350D kit w/ the 18-55mm lens. Also buying a 2gb compact flash 100x for about $60. THen buying a backup battery since I'll be away from charger throughout my tours in Europe.

And i'm defintely buying the 50mm f/1.8 lens now since again, it's only $70 or 80.

Just bought a whole bunch of stuff:
Crumpler - 5 Million Dollar Camera Bag - $70
Canon Digital Rebel XT w/ 18-55mm kit
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 lens
4GB Sandisk Ultra II Compact Flash

And I'll order an extra battery from ebay for $10. hehe

 - I know!!!
Believe me, I soooo want to. But there's the issue of being pretty much unemployed (temp jobs don't pay well) and impending car MOT Tax and insurance. If I have any money left after that, well, we'll see. I wanna replace my car soon too if possible... And given what I'm planning (the replacement car) - that may be more impressive! :p (though this may be slightly OT as usual!!!)

Make sure you start up a new thread on the car you wanna buy, i'm quite insterested in what you brits have as choices.

I don't know who you buy your equipment from, but I think you're putting their kids through college. ;)

Nice list!

Well, I shot for various automotive publications in the US and Japan for 6 years so that paid for most of the equipment. I don't shoot pieces for magazines anymore but doing internal photo work for my company and for a few clients here and there for commercial use.

somebody is big pimping...

F3, F5, F100...holy hell man.

do you have a name?

if you've shot for automotive magazines, your name might ring a bell for me.
